whats 'special' with this bomb?
It's twice as massive (500kg) as the FAB-250.
*Edited for accuracy.
500kg is total mass, typically explosive is about half of that. this goes for all large air-dropped general purpose bombs (ie not bunker busters, not thermobaric and some others)
this thing right there looks suspiciously like FAB-500 M-62, which has about 200kg of fill (russian clone of torpex)
Thank you for the correction.
thanks. I read it as first time they used a glide bomb and I was like ???
They are old fashioned dum bombs equipped with a modern "backpack" glide kit. The glide kit has wings that swing out and avionics that steer the bomb to its target using gps with a range (up to 50km) depending on the launch altitude.
A cheap way to get 500kg of explosives to something you want to blow up.
Ukranians have aasm hammr and glsdb for this. Glsdb is arguably cooler as it has a rocket motor and can be deployed from the ground using (hi)mars. But gps jamming by the Russians has proven their deployment difficult.
Edit: moved the 50 km to show it's range not launch altitude.
the big thing is if your scared of losing your planes you can launch farther away. Especially if your enemies hands are tied and can't engage you in your country.
So, assuming the guidance system worked as expected, the bomb was guided to that particular house right?
Yes
It's great when you need to ⬆️➡️⬇️⬇️⬇️ the enemy!
Not great when used against civilians houses though.
