Frankly I don't know what they're supposed to do. It's probably political suicide to keep him on the ticket, but it would also probably be political suicide to replace him. I don't see any way you could replace him without just handing a victory to the other side here, at this point that would just be perfect fodder. The campaign practically runs itself.
