Hi all,

I was thinking of gifting someone, who is going to travel, an airtag-ish thing for android. I don't know the first thing about them, but a quick search learned me that:

  • airtag is for apple - the person uses android

  • some of these gadgets have subscriptions - i don't want to saddle them up with additional money grabs

  • Tile seems to have a shady history, in the past selling locations of millions of users

It needs to be suitable for europe and asia, if that matters.

Could you give me some recommendations or info what i would need to consider?

Thank you for reading. Have a great day!

EDIT: thank you for your replies. I don't think i'm going to pursue this type of gift any further then.

Google is on its way to release its own Find my device network with "Airtag" like products https://9to5google.com/2023/05/10/android-find-my-device-trackers/

Sadly, it got postponed https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/27/23810052/google-find-my-device-delay-apple-unknown-tracker-alerts-stalking, and we don't know when it will be available. My guess (that's 100% based on nothing) is that we will get a date during Google Pixel event

Unfortunately, my advice would be - don't. Such tags only work well when every device can scan for them. Android is not one of such devices. I'm and android guy, but Apples has done this one correctly and Google hasn't.

Such as0 the 'Find my phone' network that's beena round for a while now?

Find my phone works by thr phone itself checking in. Airtags are passive - they're being tracked by all the iphones in range.

You need to wait for this: https://chipolo.net/en-us/products/chipolo-one-point

It was supposed to go on sale one month ago, but then apple asked google to delay sales until they implement stalker detection for this tracker in iOS. How long will be delay last? We only know that the longer the delay, the more profits apple can make from airtag sales. It's not in their interests to quickly push this patch to ios...

Other products don't work as well as they don't have the massive userbase
