There's no problem with privacy and dignity in gender neutral facilities, because it's for one fucking person at a time.

[–] Fal@yiffit.net 9 points 6 months ago (2 children)

There ARE bathrooms that are co-ed. I live in San Francisco and I've seen them. But it's very very rare, and I've only ever seen them at crowded places like theaters. And there's 99% of the time additional private bathrooms.

K but I've never seen a cinema in the UK with mixed toilets so moot to the UK. Gender neutral here is like a disabled toilet or a small cafe which only has space for a single toilet.

[–] Fal@yiffit.net 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Right. My point was that what conservatives are worried about is exceedingly rare, and in the absolute most liberal place in the country, and it's even still not a big deal and there are other options

[–] _skj@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago (2 children)

"in the country"

Bruh, their point was you are talking about a different country. I happen to agree with your opinion, but how bathrooms work in Los Angeles has no bearing on the laws in the UK.

[–] VaultBoyNewVegas@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Exactly and even in the UK the laws of England won't necessarily be the same as the laws of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

[–] Fal@yiffit.net 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

So I can't make a comment with related info? Like the US culture wars aren't relevant to what laws are being proposed in the UK?

[–] _skj@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Absolutely post relevant info, I'm saying your audience here doesn't consider what you posted to be relevant.

If your comments had tied in to the greater anglosphere discussions around trans people or used the examples as a thing to emulate or avoid, that would be relevant.

As they are, your comments just sound like you think of England as an extension of the US or at least you think the lawmakers of England are concerned about bathrooms in California

[–] Fal@yiffit.net 0 points 6 months ago

I'm saying it's not big deal, and even the most liberal part of the US only has what the conservatives are complaining about in extremely rare circumstances in addition to other options, and it's also not a big deal. That sounds perfectly relevant

I had some in college and the occasional gay bar. They’re fine.

Solving things that were never really problems whilst ignoring a heap of social injustice across the country? Yup, that sounds like the Tories.

Go on a plane, gender neutral toilets. On a train? Same thing. Most cafes like Pret or Nero have a single toilet that everyone uses without issue. What on earth are they solving here?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 19 points 6 months ago

What on earth are they solving here?

Nothing, of course. Just pandering to the hateful and doing their best to portray harmless people trying to peacefully live their lives as scary "others" who are inherently predatory 🤬

[–] Wolfman86@hexbear.net 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

In addition to that, have you ever even heard of a trans person assaulting someone?

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 8 points 6 months ago

Well even if one did it won't be prevented by gender separation of toilets.

[–] Worx@lemmynsfw.com 52 points 6 months ago (3 children)

I'm confused. In what way to universal toilets (toilet and sink in one self-contained room) not allow for the biological needs of women? Why are girls in schools getting UTIs because they're so scared of peeing in universal toilets? Why don't these work for trans people and NBs?

Is this anything other than just conservatives being transphobic and wanting to keep traditional toilets alive? I feel like I must be missing something here

As an aside...My dad's church has just been refurbished with this style of toilet and he is very against them, but he's also against trans people so..

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I honestly believe there is no real problem out in the real world with this. It's just the media who is making this shit up to make people fight amongst themselves.

[–] errer@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

There should be no gendered bathrooms at all and everyone needs to grow the fuck up about performing natural bodily functions in the presence of anyone.

[–] reversedposterior@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Most toilet facilities in England have a shared washing up area so in most cases it would be prohibitively expensive to convert older ones to having a basin etc in each stall. Newer buildings tend to build in single person toilets which are then universal. I think the fear for some comes from having shared washing areas.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I think the fear for some comes from having shared washing areas

Fear which is of course based on ridiculous fearmongering from transphobes and completely divorced from reality.

You know how I know you're a man?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You know how I know you're a bigot?

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

Yep! I see zero problems with a woman sharing a small space with strange men.

So yeah, you're a man or you might have seen a woman's point of view. Do I get to call you a misogynist?

[–] Worx@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 6 months ago

You're not necessarily wrong, but also that wasn't an argument made in the article so I don't think it's relevant here

[–] Blamemeta@lemm.ee 0 points 6 months ago (2 children)

You know the whole "bear or man" thing going around? It applies to bathrooms too.

[–] Worx@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I don't know the bear or man thing. I don't think. I saw a post about debating a bear that I made a joke on, but I'm sure that what just a shitpost

Big Joel is always such a trip already that I stay away from Little Joel. He has such a unique way of looking at things

Concerns were noted that sometimes they let the wrong people keep their dignity
