How many people contributed to the Kickstarter based on this promise? Will they receive a refund?

Yeah I'm curious about that myself.

I mean, native ports are cool and all, but are they really needed? I would assume the game runs just fine with Proton.

There are some very vocal people who will tell you that proton is just a stopgap measure, and shouldn't be relied on for the future of Linux gaming.

That said, I know the devs have been putting in effort/patches to make sure the proton/steam deck experience works well, and I consider that just as good. All I really want from devs is actual support of the Linux platform, and if they choose to do that through a tool like proton I'm ok with it.

It's very unfortunate for Mac users though.

They are nice to have, but most of the time aren't updated as often as the Windows build.

Honestly better cancelled, than bad ports.

Given that a common subset of the Win32 ABI is now a reasonably efficient virtual machine for running PC games on Linux and (soon) macOS, we can probably expect “do Mac/Linux ports” replaced with “make sure the Windows .exe runs on Mac/Linux”
