Hello new Lemmy friends!

Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.

The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.

Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.

We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

How does she not see how entirely confusing her content is for her followers? “I’m not good. I’m struggling. I was on couch watch” to “I’m good I promise” talking about her health…

What happened to the monthly breast check reminders? She’s such a fraud.

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 17 points 4 months ago

A moment where she could have (arguably) done something helpful for women and dropped the ball as soon as she mentioned it 😒

[–] crownofgold6@lemmy.ca 10 points 4 months ago

I was thinking about that a couple days ago! That whole breast cancer scare was such a scam.

[–] FraudulentFruit1@lemmy.ca 15 points 4 months ago (2 children)

She’s on a high right now because she hit 2.4 million when it wasn’t too long along she was on a steady decline to 2.2. She’s a walking contradiction.

[–] OddQuality@lemmy.ca 19 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

She only hit 2.4 mil followers because she bought them, though. But I guess if anyone believes their own hype, it's definitely her.

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 12 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I don’t care if she doesn’t work out but man the lying is so damn obvious. If she worked out she wouldn’t constantly look “perfect” on stories. She’d get those flyaways from sweat, the makeup would run, the hair would be tied back, etc. No she doesn’t work out. She sits at home on her bed or couch and posts nontent. I’d love to see some healthy living content from these bopo nutcases.

[–] FraudulentFruit1@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

It’s the lying for me as well. She says she doesn’t sweat 😅 Someone on Reddit during the RunDisney replied to me and said it’s all the Botox that’s preventing the sweat and any redness in the face! I don’t know much about Botox but I think that’s possible?

[–] Blueeyes84@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

They literally use botox to block the sweat glands if you have hyperhidrosis, so I guess it's true, lol.

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Oh wow! I learned something new. I thought not sweating would be dangerous.

[–] Blueeyes84@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 months ago

Well, it would block only a small percentage of the sweat glands and it's used only when sweating a lot (like when it affects your quality of life).

[–] Bitchwhiskers@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The point of the bopo movement, though, isn’t about healthy living. It’s about accepting bodies exactly as they are. It’s about all bodies being worthy of respect.

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Yeah I do understand that. I guess I don’t fully agree with the bopo movement as I don’t see the body as worthy of respect but the human in that body. I’m sure someone with a similar body to her would appreciate seeing that not all active bodies look like super athletes. Especially when someone like TBP is going to gloat about being runner to all her followers.

[–] Bitchwhiskers@lemmy.ca 13 points 4 months ago

I just remembered that in the post referenced by this picture, she said something along the lines of how haters who troll her about not working out and being lazy don’t know how she lives her life, that they have “zero clue”. This cracks me up bc she posts every minute detail of her damn day!! oh we know lady. You’ve shown us!

Also she’s “running 3 races THIS MONTH”. Fetch the woman a cross to get up on, post haste!

[–] Bitchwhiskers@lemmy.ca 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yeah don’t get me wrong I think SNL is a complete hypocrite most of the time. Her words undo some of her other words on a regular basis. See the thing is, if more people cared, like you, about the human inside the meat suit, the bopo movement wouldn’t need to exist.
I just wanted to clarify that point about bopo- they usually are not advocates for a particular lifestyle bc most of those lifestyles run parallel to the very insidious diet culture. Ya know?

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 months ago

That’s fair! And I appreciate the clarity. I don’t want to be the voice of misinformation 🫣. Being open to learning and being corrected when wrong is important to me. I love hearing so many other (much more educated) people’s perspectives and understandings on these topics. I learn so much on here. I used to be very pro body positivity but I see the actual harm it’s done to myself and my health so I have second thoughts now. It’s a dog eat dog world out there with the extreme sides of everything competing for our attention. It’s enough to make anyone crazy.

[–] olivesandpoppies@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

People are annoyed by the body positive movement not for its roots by for who took it over. People with privilege are again taking over a movement. I recommend going to read the article called “#BodyPositive? A critical exploration of the body positive movement within physical cultures taking an intersectionality approach” by Meridith Griffin, K. Alysse Bailey and Kimberly J. Lopez.

In the paper, they examine is how capitalized and white the movement because. Like how only white, cis, fitter or mid sized individuals are the ones using the movement to amplify themselves and that there’s a lack of representation by those that started the movement, and the removal of the platforms of LGBTQIA2S + , older people, actually plus sized people, and disabled people in favor of heavy set or fit white people. They also talk about how it was “commodified and packaged into a product or service for consumption.”

The true body positive movement is to be intersectional, and not meant to make white people (who don’t face as many barriers), money.

Thank you! I’ll read that with my morning coffee now ☕️ 💕

[–] MoonChild@lemmy.ca 12 points 4 months ago (2 children)

What about the spoons? Or I’m just doing my best? Exhausted after therapy? Haven’t heard anything about therapy lately.

[–] Spicykitty@lemmy.ca 16 points 4 months ago (1 children)

She won, the sub is down, who needs therapy now. She was using it to victimize herself. She got the outcome she wanted.. if therapy pops up again, I suspect it'll only be after Janette posts about her again.

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago

Omg. You’re absolutely right. This is exactly it! Ugh.

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Surprise!! She fooled us. She’s actually “good”. The contradictions are beyond infuriating!

[–] MoonChild@lemmy.ca 13 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I always think about those women following her who struggle with things and watch her being ‘good’ and wonder how they feel.

[–] Spicykitty@lemmy.ca 15 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I haven't followed in a long time. I don't even hate watch. I see what I see here. And now that the sub is down, I see much less of her. And my mental health and self esteem are much better. It's wild. Even being totally informed of what a fraud she is, watching her even for snark purposes was still bringing me down!

[–] MoonChild@lemmy.ca 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I really appreciate your honesty and I know you aren’t alone. She has a way of chipping at a person’s sense of reality.

[–] Spicykitty@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago

❤️❤️❤️

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I’m right there with you! The less I think about her and shitfluencers, the happier I seem to be. I can’t wait for a world without them.

[–] Spicykitty@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 months ago

Amazing! Same here ❤️

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Not sure why the image didn’t load.

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Hello @otter@lemmy.ca @Shadow@lemmy.ca @mp3@lemmy.ca,

Sorry to ping you, but could you please have a look at the issue above with posting pictures? It's not the first occurence

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

I suspect op did something wrong, there's no image attached to the initial post here.

Might be a bug in their client if they're using one.

FYI you can just tag admin@lemmy.ca and that'll notify us all too via a shared chat.

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 3 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Alright. @Cheesecake@lemmy.ca, which app or website did you use to upload the picture?

Oh that's cool for the admin ping, how did you do that? Is that built-in in Lemmy? First time I see this.

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago

I have a custom Python script which watches our database for a variety of things and notifies us. New reports, users signing up, people mentioning or PM'ing admin, etc.

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I probably have done something wrong, originally. I’m just using the lemmy.ca website at the moment. I remembered I can edit my posts here, so I went back and uploaded it again and it seems to have worked.

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Oh, I see it’s not working anymore. Okay, I have no idea!

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

When you uploaded the image, did you use a keyboard shortcut to paste it or did you use the upload button?

I haven't noticed this before but I can poke around

[–] Cheesecake@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 3 points 4 months ago

I noticed a weird behaviour lately with the latest Lemmy version.

Can you try to

  • Add the title first
  • Click the upload button to add the picture
  • wait around 15-30 seconds for the image to upload
  • Create the post?

If found that doing any step in another other would remove the picture

[–] Eol@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Who is this person? Why do people follow and feed these people?

[–] InfluencersNeedToGo@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 months ago

She’s good now that she posted the reel about how she got the most body hate this past week and is making it work for her. I just can’t stand her false narrative in every way.
