Uh, who cares? Use what you want people

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 55 points 1 month ago

99% of the time with this shit no one's heard of it because it's not happening.

[–] FiniteBanjo 24 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

Agreed. I'm not much of a contrarian, but I certainly wouldn't value the likes and dislikes of a bunch of ipad babies who judge people by the quality of their fortnite skin.

I look forward to inflicting terminal cringe on gen z

[–] SharkEatingBreakfast@sopuli.xyz 60 points 1 month ago (3 children)

The gen that brought back mullets and serial killer glasses think my fashion choices are cringe?

I'll allow them to wear what they like and we'll both shut up about it, thanks.

If any GenZ want to know why I do uncool things even though you've attempted to educate me: it's because doing so makes you physically cringe like an ice cube down the spine and it's funny.

[–] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 17 points 1 month ago (15 children)

I think a lot of millennials are "button-pushers" (aka enjoy pushing people's buttons) and love that kinda stuff; and if Gen Z wants to continue to get along with us, they're gonna have to learn how to not get mad when we intentionally press their buttons. Like, the 90s and 2000s were the best time to be a button-pusher because trolling at that time was an art form and form of internet comedy. Sure, trolls could be infuriating, but you knew they were fucking with you.

Nowadays, the term has been appropriated and redefined to refer to someone who spreads propaganda. Pushing someone else's buttons is now frowned on, not just irl but online as well. Sure, there are shitposts, but there's sort of an expectation that you're meant to ensure everyone is on the same page and not leaving people clueless. It's not like trolling where you're intentionally trying to mislead someone to fuck with them.

The people who wear white socks with slides in public have something to say about my ankle socks? Get off my lawn, idiot kids.

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago

I very recently bought my very first ankle socks because it was so damn hot. And a couple wife-beaters which I had never worn in my life. I guess I turned the age where I don't give a fuck. And get off my lawn.

All the more reason to use them IMO

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 32 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As a millennial I'ma have to just come out and say it:

The way we're all pilling on gen-z and saying they're all dumb for this... It's giving Boomer. Not a good look.

Even assuming this was really posted by a gen-z, we can still do our own thing while they make whatever the new cool thing is. We don't have to try to be cool forever. We're old now, folks, it's ok

[–] threeduck@aussie.zone 19 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Unless I'm reading it wrong, both people here are trying to look cool in front of Gen Z, and are giving up things they like in order to accomplish that.

My general understanding is that the Millenials really like Gen Z. I know I do, they seem funnier, smarter and more socially conscious than the groups I grew up with.

[–] Landslide7648@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 month ago

You’re reading it right. Not sure how one could read this any other way.

However, misunderstanding content online is often framed as a boomer thing so OP’s comment still works surprisingly well.

I realized I'd successfully gotten old when I was told ankle socks were out of style and didn't give a shit.

I like how these things keep coming out as if generations are a homogenous group

I work with Gen Z colleagues that use reaction GIFs, I also know millennials that find them cringe

People like different things, you will always be cringe to someone

What I'm not understanding is letting kids dictate what's cool as if cool was ever dictated by anyone but me 😎

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 9 points 1 month ago

Right? You stopped doing something because a bunch of high schoolers think it’s cringe?

It’s weird, companies have always let young people dictate culture for money reasons, but I’ve never really thought about it being adults scared of what kids think. Like…have some personality? Have some kind of sense of who you are and what you like. Fuck what kids think about unimportant trends. We should listen to them when it comes to social issues, because that’s just called progress. But this just strikes me as such a weird way to think.

Ohh? gen z dislike reaction gif?

[–] confusedbytheBasics@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The ignorance of op. They don't find reaction gifs cringe because they are inherently cringe, it's because you and people your age use them. Stop with the reaction gifs and something else you do will be singled out.

why do you give a shit what gen z thinks? young people think calling everything cringe is a replacement for a personality. the best part of getting older is not giving a fuck. why are you doing this to yourself

(this isn't anything against gen z i only named them because of the original tweet, I'm speaking in general)

Reaction gifs were always cringe. Emojis are as well, the only cool emotes are text smileys >:|

I understand using generations as an aid to statisticians dividing populations but using generations to generalise behaviour is weaponising age in a way that shouldn’t happen (as a test swap out a generation comment for a body type or your homophobic slang of choice)

Wait…what’s going on with ankle socks? Like the shorter socks you wear with sneakers and shorts when you go running? There is now something wrong with that?

Zoomer here. This is the first I'm hearing of this. Though this isn't the first time I've seen people make up bullshit to get mad at younger people.

I never got on board with reaction GIFs (or GIFs in general). The nerdy side of me says “what a terrible format” and the Millenial, dial-up me would rather use text.
