It's legit. I also recommend using obtainium app from fdroid, which can download apks from github, and other sources. It also checks if there are updates for installed apps.

I should do thatπŸ€” thanks for the reminder

Edit: So I open the app, click add app > paste "https://github.com/ProtonMail/android-mail" (for example) > add button leaving default and I'm done?

It has pros and cons. You fully trust the developer and also most often Github. For a reasonable experience you need a Github account and Token to avoid a fast rate limit.

Also, F-Droid is a really simple application, which doesnt support a lot of things, reducing attack surface a lot.

I use Obtainium and get most apps from releases, some from F-Droid. I would say, if it isnt known, prefer F-Droid.

I do have a github account tho. I only use it because ProtonMail isn't on f-droid and without an app to get updates, I'll forget to update in no time

[–] boredsquirrel@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 months ago

Yes updates are important.

I use it too, but I got those doubts. But tbh I am too lazy to uninstall apps again and reinstall from the F-Droid source

Yep, adding apps is simple.

Okay, that's good to know. Thanks.

Edit: It seems you can download the APK on their website: https://protonapps.com/

[–] Ghoelian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You can, but you won't get updates that way. Some of their apps are available as GitHub releases, which you can add to Obtainium. You can also add the direct apk download links to Obtainium, but update checking isn't great using that method in my experience.

I realized that F-Droid doesn't have latest version of the apps though.

You'd be surprised to find out that ProtonMail uses Google's push service (unless you have GMS disabled) so your emails aren't hidden from Google as much as you think.

[–] shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 months ago

Not mine since i dont have play services. I have never gotten an email notif from them since 2019 other than failed to send which is local

[–] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

your emails aren't hidden from Google as much as you think.

You're wrong, Proton encrypts notifications before sending them to you through Google or Apple push services. The notification is then decrypted in the Proton client on your phone, and only then displayed to you.

Can't find the blog post on the Proton website anymore, but here's an official response from the Proton support team on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1cmcre5/comment/l33oxua/

Sending plain text notifications is impossible for Proton btw, since they don't hold the encryption keys to your email inbox and can't read your emails themselves, and thus can't send you a notification with the email subject and body.

[–] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

titles and senders are not encrypted, they are capable of sending that

[–] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The notifications themselves are still end-to-end encrypted though (from the Proton Mail notification server to the client on your phone), so Google, Apple or any other push notification provider can't read them.

[–] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

sure, I believe that. though google still knows precisely if you receive a new mail, and the bigger problem is that without google services notifications won't work whatsoever

[–] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Currently, yes. But they are working on they're own notification systems (probably something based on WebSocket, similar to what Signal does), hopefully it will also be compatible with UnifiedPush. There's a feature request for this on the Proton user feedback tracker: https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-proton-mail/suggestions/47423924-support-unifiedpush-for-android-notifications

[–] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 2 points 1 month ago

they have been working on it for years, as I remember. In the meantime they have released half a dozen software that I believe are more complex than a simple notification system.

Just a heads up, if you have a modern smart phone, Fdroid Basic is the latest and greatest official F-Droid app. The non-basic one is for older devices, now. It has to do with internally being able to use Android's newest targetsdk version.

[–] shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 months ago

From what I understand, that is not totally true. Basic does target the newer Android versions, but from what I understand, they are bringing the main client up to date as well. I'm using the main client at the moment, and it used to target 25, and now it's targeting 29. It's obviously still not the newest, but it has increased quite a bit, and I think it will continue to do so.
