This is a community for all things Moomin.

The Moomins is a franchise created by finnish author/illustrator Tove Jansson. It features a vast amount of comics, TV series, movies, books and games, telling various stories mostly set in moominvalley.

If you are new to the Moomins, this video essay is a fantastic starting point to learn about this family-owned franchise.

Probably not, there is just one. I dont think this is her actual "origin story" though if she even has anything concrete.

Groke (or Mörkö in finnish) is somewhat mysterious entity. She either hates warmth or craves it terribly and either way will freeze everything, can't say which.

In the cartoon/anime she just appears one day, looking for a thing that was taken from her. Moomins had never heard of her before. Also, in the cartoon/anime she is absolutely terrifying, like nightmares for years grade terrifying for kids.

It's interesting to notice how often they seem to switch between this adult mindset and then again just being straight up kids. I guess that's also of value in the books

To be fair, Tove wrote these in swedish. They were then translated to english by her brother Lars, whose english was better, but still not author level.
