Pat gently on the top of head then slowly yet carefully stroke down the spine, always petting in one direction only, i.e. rub south down spine, lift hand and start a top the spine again. Gentle finger nail rubs are a bonus 👌

At first I thought there was a cat under the hat in the pics where it is just on the surface instead of your head.
