"Amazon must have recognized the potential success, as 73% of people listen to audiobooks daily."

Well that's a lie. They even posted a reference for the statistic but clearly didn't bother to read it.

The number their source gives is 45% (for US and no mention of daily), with 73% of those people listening during their commutes.

Also, that "Fresh" audiobook statistics article is from 2021, but they slapped "(2025)" onto the title to preserve the freshness.

Cost? 🏴‍☠️🦜

I like my local library and use it for the kids, but I also like to own books (and other media) to add to my collection.

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

My library is a joke.

I can't deal with audio books as they are spoken much slower than I like to read. If they spoke as fast as I read, however, it would sound awful.

Maybe it's about time we have a database of business connections e.g who owns what / what is owned by whom, which companies work together and what their relationships are, where the businesses are headquartered and spread out across the globe, etc.

It doesn't have to have any agenda, just that data. However it could be used to then have a "boycott" app or something. "I want to boycott FAANG, their subsidiaries, and whichever other companies are owned by their CEOs". With the app, that should be a simple ask. Or simply "I want to boycott anything Nestlé".

There are boycott apps out there already. Haven’t tried them all to see if they offer what you’re looking for, but they are out there.

Edit: Boycott for Peace is one

I haven't found any that's opensource and has a open database with an explanation of how it's augmented / sources for the stuff in the DB. That leads me to question the app or its DB. What if they were paid to exclude a relationship or company entirely? Crazier things have happened.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

So the solution is to not use the app and hope other people make one you approve of?

[–] cybersin@lemm.ee 0 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Yes. They literally stated in their post what the shortcomings of the app are.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 0 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

No, they mentioned paranoia they had and provided no alternative

[–] cybersin@lemm.ee 1 points 3 hours ago

Asking for transparency in an inherently political app is not paranoia.

AbeBooks? TIL. I love that site

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 3 points 6 hours ago

I use World of Books instead. It's British owned and good value.
