MODERATORS

I just got a ban for "encouraging violence". Someone asked "what will you do to celebrate when he dies?" Someone else started talking about how they have a fantasy about getting the death note and how they'd put that to use. I chimed in with my silly fantasy of using a seance to end politicians' careers by getting them possessed by the ghost of GG Allin, and enjoying the mayhem that would ensue.

So, anyway, right after that, I found out that all the people who were so transgressive to have actually liked that comment of mine can, as of a couple days ago, expect punishment as well. How draconian.

And so that was that. No sense in being lorded over on the internet by the same people who run HOAs. It'll be fun watching Reddit flush itself down the toilet from over here, I expect.

GG Allin! I saw a doco on him a few years back called Hated.

Whole shit was that insane. When he jumped into the crowd and started smearing them with poo. He just didn't give a fuck.

[–] astro_plane@lemm.ee 5 points 7 hours ago

Just made my account. Reddit can no longer be a trustworthy site since Spez keeps shitting all over the site with dumb ass rules.

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 8 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Welcome. Welcome. Secure your shit. Stay away from talkies. Use the block button. Enjoy.

I got banned for suggesting that maybe all the conservatives young men (the “alpha male types”) should be sent to an island where they can fight in an artificial, made up war against each other and then when they return home they’ll be progressives.

LOL. I was just making a point that people who call for wars are often the ones who have never fought in one. Oh well. Getting banned from Reddit is probably for the best, I should be supporting Canadian services anyway.

[–] Fabian@lemmy.zip 9 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Good idea. We can dedicate a small island where all 'Alpha males' fight against each other every year. The winner is the true Alpha

Be the change you want to see in the world. I’ve been on here since the api controversy. I’m done with Reddit for good now, after about 15 years. So now I’m going to try to drive activity on all the niche communities I want to see here.

[–] Fabian@lemmy.zip 7 points 8 hours ago

I also did not like the api changes. But I was at least able to understand why they did that. But the shit that is going on now is enough

[–] kerf@lemmy.world 11 points 10 hours ago

I also left for good after 'API-gate', after more than ten years.. It actually hurt to see how something that had been such a big part of my life for so long got worse and worse, like a family member becoming radicalized or something.

[–] Mustakrakish@lemmy.world 14 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

I switched over and am permanently deleting my accounts. Be sure to do that, and don't just stop using it. They'll really only start to feel it when a bunch of 10+ year accounts start deleting, since they can't waive it away as "consumer fickleness" that will swing back around

[–] zipzoopaboop@lemmynsfw.com 9 points 12 hours ago

Don't just delete accounts, delete all your posts first. There's multiple 3rd party tools to do it since Reddit only lets you do 1 at a time manually

[–] cavtroop@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

i just deleted my 9+ year old account.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

You’d think asking people what they’d do to celebrate when he dies would be encouraging violence….

But it’s Reddit, so it’s probably a bait post to remove people who respond “incorrectly.”

The ignorant will be conditioned through social media. Reddit has no need for those that can think for themselves.

[–] carl_dungeon@lemmy.world 127 points 1 day ago (8 children)

I got perma banned for saying I hoped Marjorie Taylor green trips and swallows her own head.

[–] SheenSquelcher@lemm.ee 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Hilarious - literally and the fact that would trigger a permaban.

[–] carl_dungeon@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

I appealed it too- they said after human review, I was inciting violence.

[–] formation@lemm.ee 56 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I got my perma ban from saying "only a matter of time before Elon gets united healthcare'd" was on there since 2006.

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Damn, is there really that many people getting banned? I've heard a bit about what's happening but didn't think it was a widespread thing.

[–] Unquote0270@programming.dev 28 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

This was announced by admin so it's definitely widespread. Turns out they hadn't even considered that someone can edit a post or comment and that you could be banned for upvoting something which, at the time, had no "violent" content.

[–] sloppychops@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 day ago

What if Marjorie Taylor Green already tripped and swallowed her head?

Her being inside-out would explain a lot.

[–] Benjaben@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

This is some Shel Silverstein style shade lol, I like it

[–] Braindamagedeluxe@lemm.ee 11 points 1 day ago

ok im gonna steal that

I've been here since reddit backstabbed its 3rd party app devs, and even just since then, Lemmy has grown a LOT while reddit continues to enshittify.

Welcome aboard!

[–] Vreyan31@reddthat.com 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I feel like today is my first day but I made a serious attempt to move here when that happened. I just couldn't get the apps to work on my android -- I kept having to make new accounts when the one I'd set up would suddenly no longer log in.

But today things seem to be working beautifully!

[–] grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 8 hours ago

I'm using Connect on Android. It's worth a whirl!

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

There are quite a few mobile apps to choose from now. I'm using Sync with no complaints, but I haven't done a comparison since I joined.

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 9 hours ago

My main complaint with sync is that the premium version is just too damn expensive. At least give me a discount since I bought premium for Reddit sync ! Then again, it usually fails to serve me the ads these days, so I guess it's alright.

[–] DosDude@retrolemmy.com 16 points 20 hours ago

Welcome to the fediverse, and retrolemmy! If you have any questions there are loads of "new to Lemmy" communities like !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca. Users are usually pretty helpful to reddit refugees, since most uf us are refugees ourselves.

If you have any questions or recommendations for retrolemmy itself there is !general@retrolemmy.com , or you can message me privately.

[–] Bahnd@lemmy.world 63 points 1 day ago (6 children)

Welcome to Lemmy, be sure to build your own subscription and block list. The updoots dont tally on your account (which I think is one of the healthiest changes), speak your mind, each comment stands on its own, and bad takes are not forever (Ive had my own fair share). If you dont like your mods, change instances or make your own.

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (5 children)

Bad takes are forever here. It's something I hate. Sometimes I'll comment on something and then end up deleting it because I just don't wanna get into it but it only deletes on your instance. I'll still get replies from everyone who can still see it.

Also is it still stupidly complicated to delete pics here?

[–] Bahnd@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

The point is that because there is no vote tally you just have to assume everyone is a normal person, there is no scarlet letter on your account by having -2500 votes, you, the readers have to put in the effort to judge someone (or determine if they are a bot). Except for your accounts home instance, there is no badge that says someone posts to hexbear or someplace that is a bit off.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 18 points 1 day ago

It does delete and propagate to other instances, but the process is not immediate. There can be some delay. I’ve had replies to deleted comments coming hours later if my instance was running behind.

Am I completely out of touch?

[–] JSocial@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 day ago

You're federated when you post here. There are definitely instances that are a bunch of nazis, a bunch of instances that are really dumb, and more. It's the internet. Everything you post is there forever. I like my instance, because it's the best I've found. Finding and identifying your home instance is more important than blocking users and communities. That will be the next step. Welcome human!

I got banned for harassing a mod

I still have no idea what they were talking about

I was on reddit for over 10 years

If we ever get our hands on the data, I think it's probably a safe hypothesis that most of the banned users are anti-trump.

Gotta make reddit a safe space to support his reign or emperor Donny will have a temper tantrum and Spez is easily frightened into submission

[–] finder585@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I got banned for harassing a mod

I still have no idea what they were talking about

Here is how that works; a subreddit mod bans you, preemptively or otherwise. The mod-list for the sub is now permanently hidden from you. Subreddit mod(s) spam posts to their subreddit. You report post(s) you genuinely think are violating the rules over the course of a few months. Without realizing you are reporting one of the mods. A few more months go by. Reddit finally reviews your reports. The admin assumes you are harassing the mods of that sub. Receive escalating suspensions until banned.

Subs pushing Far-right, Russian and Islamic propaganda use it pretty effectively to silence anyone speaking out against their racist bullshit.

[–] HappySkullsplitter@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

use it pretty effectively to silence anyone speaking out against their racist bullshit.

That checks out

[–] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 58 points 1 day ago

Welcome. It's better here and with more it will grow. Thinking about hosting even. Why not.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm starting to feel left out that I never got banned. Still not going back though

Welcome my son. You may proceed unto the Fediverse with Saint Luigi's blessing.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 18 points 1 day ago

We are small, but Lemmy is something that no business can take away. I have faith. Been here for a while and happy to see new faces.

[–] Pavidus@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

I have to say, that is one hilariously fantastic way to wish ill on a group of people.

Welcome to Lemmy!

[–] 1984 6 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Ive seen the same thing reported on Lemmy.

Moderators need to be careful to not fall into the same trap.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

Some home countries that host many of the instances on lemmy have pretty rigid rules for what constitutes promoting violence. Many of the mods/admins are just doing what they can to ensure the lights stay on by removing posts/comments that violate these rules.

[–] 1984 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

Would be nice with a list of that somewhere so users can choose what kind of moderation culture/country laws fits their own personality.

Some users definently wants to be protected from content they dont like, but some feel equally strongly they they can handle it without a internet daddy.

Its a bit like how rich people use swiss banks to get to keep their money, since they dont agree that the country they are born in should take a large cut of their profits.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

There is info and ToS on each instance’s main page.

Well, an unpaid job that involves exercising power over others is always going to attract insufferable, self-important people. It's why I say they're the same people who run HOAs. Just petty little power trippers. I mean, if it ever gets bad, one can always start one's own instance, make competing subs, and make them off limits to the offending mods. Odds are good they'd be driving the members away as it is.
