Merry greetings, wrap up warm :3

In spirit of the 2007scape threads, we're here on Lemmy, MK IV!

Post your achievements, goals, shenanigans, thoughts on new updates, and so on!

I’ll start, still healing up on the broken shin, finding a place to live, life is starting to look up! Slowly reaching 99 slayer (10 Hydras from 96!) after which I will resume my rightful place as being a ToB nut ;)

I was a massive plonker and chucked my scythe so started back from nil again, which is a feeling I'm quite acquainted with. A week in of mobile only (since my laptop broke!), and a lot of herb runs, hydra and abusing elves and I'm back at 50m+ now...

However, fear not, I have devised a dastardly plan to turn myself into a hydra bot; I snagged a Steam Deck! Does anyone have any cool tips/tricks for running Runelite on it?

I'm very familiar with Linux but was wondering how much I could push myself PvM wise with it (as much as I can on 20 def). Still it seems like having all the features of RuneLite whilst being able to play anywhere seems awesome, as well as being able to use it as a full blown pc with the dock. A very nice piece of kit indeed :)

As regarding updates, I've been out of the loop a bit, anything interesting? As a Pure I sometimes miss some of Main and Iron spectacles.

Cheers, Ew0

(TIP: If you're poor get 85 thieving and go pickpocket elves. You'll be rich. Also if you want a few free deaths for deaths coffer everyday, make some moonlight mead :)

Started a GIM with some friends. Ironman is honestly so much more fun than mains to me, but I would hate to do it alone.

Just a quick note on playing osrs with controller. That is how I received my first ban in runescape.

It was back during season 6 of game of thrones. I spent 20ish hours binge watching earlier seasons to catch up while alching at the ge. Suddenly disconnected and discovered I had a macroing major ban with no option to appeal. Went to the only point of contact to jagex staff to plea my case, the community forum, only to be told if I complain again they would perma me.

Sorry if this is a downer to read but just wanted to warn others. I hope jagex has improved since then. This mightve been before mobile was even released so maybe they have better not detection now.

Eitherway, as a fellow Steam Deck enjoyer I would highly recommend checking out emulation station if you are a fan of retro gaming. It's one of my most frequently used SD apps.

I hope you get to 99 quickly, I am averaging 5% of my goal to 97 mining every day, only 70% left!

That does sound like a bad experience for sure :s

Hopefully they've ironed out all the false positives, I've heard other people say the same before. I'll definitely make sure to map 1:1.

I've done things like that with my keyboard in the past and have no problems (I have left/right click keys on my mech keyboard - handy for thieving elves and stuff).

I will definitely check that out thanks! As far as new games go the only ones I really want to properly go through are Soulsbournes/Elden ring and the Witcher series. Apart from them and RS I don't really feel enthralled by newer games so emulation is definitely the way to go.

Thanks! Hang in there with mining too :-)

I don't have a Steam Deck so I can't really help you with that, but I still find it funny that Jagex somehow decided to make a security improving Jagex Launcher for a multiplatform game, but then the launcher doesn't support Linux and the method they suggest doing is running some random Lutris script from a random github repository which doesn't have any kind of support from Jagex's side. Apparently they can't even get it to Linux because they are using some kind of a licensed tech that doesn't support Linux at all.

[–] Ew0@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oo, do you have a source for that (licensed tech)? I guess they may be using closed-source stuff then maybe but I wonder how they port it to Mac!

[–] MrHandyMan@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Mod Ash mentioned it on Twitter: https://twitter.com/JagexAsh/status/1701861633532792883

Mod Korpz tells me it's built from tech licensed from another company. Inserting Linux support into it is apparently a considerably bigger ask than it sounds :(

Interesting, that's nice to know they're not just being obstinate... I wonder what license lets them use it for Mac but not Linux. Thanks!

Mac has a lot more proprietary libraries not available on Linux, which is why you'll see a lot of software supported on Mac but not Linux. My understanding of it at least, so just a lot more work to get it going on Linux universally.

Makes sense. Bit of a shame really, I'm not using a Jagex Account until they force it on me to be honest, there's no BSD support either!

Not saying they need to cater for the 5 people who play on BSD but open-source/cross-platform stuff would have been nicer to deal with.

I do still play from time to time on my old Thinkpad running OpenBSD, no sound, no GPU plugin. Maybe I'll port it over one day! :p

Jagex launcher is super nice because you don't need to enter your password every time, it's just the mobile login button which is super nice. But ya I, feel you, I have a few Linux machines I just tinker around on and have runelite on and it would be nice if they were to open source the jagex launcher so I don't have to type my damn password every time I afk timeout :)

Yeah, agree but the issue here is, what happens when their non-native implementation for Linux goes kaput? i guess we'll be having to run Windows or Android VMs!

There's tons of FOSS auth stuff but apparently Jagex isn't clued in enough...

That's pretty much my worry. I would be fine if they e.g. release their "official" lutris script or something, because at least then I would trust that they might be willing to fix issues if something comes up. But now that they are pretty much saying that they won't support Linux in any way, but you might try these solutions on your own risk, it doesn't really make me want to use them.

Yep. Oh well we still have kvm/qemu...
