Of course they do this right after trying to kill adblock.

[-] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 4 points 8 months ago

After? Have they stopped?

[-] manualoverride@lemmy.world 22 points 8 months ago

I really thought they would wait a little longer after the Adblock crackdown. Oh well, Grayjay to the rescue!

Some solutions:

[-] DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com 7 points 8 months ago

LibreTube and self-hosted Piped server is working really well for me. I only wish SmartTubeNext (or another Chromecast GTV client) would use Piped as well.

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 4 points 8 months ago

LibreTube and self-hosted Piped server is working really well for me.

I use the same stuff, it's awesome.

[-] DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com 4 points 8 months ago

Once again, it leaves me in awe of just how much power we can get from FOSS.

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 3 points 8 months ago

FOSS/FLOSS is all about empowering users and allowing them to do whatever they want, whereas proprietary software tries to take power away from the user. It's kinda sad that many people don't understand this.

Also for iOS is uYou+, installed with Sideloadly. Might not be as privacy-friendly as other options though

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 months ago

Might not be as privacy-friendly as other options though

That's why I didn't put it on the list. Also, sideloading on iOS is just a terrible experience. You either need to connect your phone to a computer every 7 days, otherwise your sideloaded apps will become unusable, or you can pay Apple $100/year for a developer subscription, so you can use your already overpriced device the way you want to. The best option is to avoid the problem entirely and get an Android phone, preferably a Google Pixel, and then install GrapheneOS on it and sideload F-Droid and LibreTube. This gives you actual freedom, as well as the highest levels of privacy and security you can get on a smartphone.

[-] shootwhatsmyname@lemm.ee 2 points 8 months ago

Just wanted to mention it in case others wanted the same experience as the official app. Sideloadly and AltStore both auto-renew over WiFi, so other than the slightly involved setup it’s just like any other app. I agree with you though, GrapheneOS/Android or the other options your listed are far better in terms of privacy and security

[-] Zerush@lemmy.ml 1 points 8 months ago

also on Desktop, using SMplayer (admits YT and most other streaming platforms, pasting the URL in > Open > URL In the browser ypu can also watch YT without ads and without YT detecting the adblocker, using this script (Firefox use the Tampermonkey or Greasymonkey extensión, in Vivaldy download the script to a folder and drag it to the extensions page in developer mode)- It put tje Video in a iFrame, with this the YouTube Adblock detector run below this layer without detecting anything.

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 4 points 8 months ago

You can also use VLC or mpv. IINA is a good option for macOS.

[-] Zerush@lemmy.ml 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I know, I used the VLC before as mediaplayer, it's very good, but the SMplayer is better, I think, Do the same, but with an cleaner UI and way easier to handle.Even eith plug-ins, eg to search direct ly YT videos, among others. It is is the graphic interface of the MPlayer and the mpv engine.

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 months ago

I prefer mpv because the SMplayer user interface is horrible IMO

[-] Zerush@lemmy.ml 1 points 8 months ago

Well, question of taste, anyway don't matter, they do the same. Try also this one (also FOSS), works wonderfully well and blazing fast.

Not listing Revanced here should put you straight to jail

[-] 8bitretro@lemmy.ml 0 points 8 months ago

Louis Rossman has pushed a media player called Grayjay, open source and has subscription implementation across youtube, twitch, and more

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

I know, Grayjay is on the list. I don't use it myself though, I prefer LibreTube for Android and Piped on desktop.

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 4 points 8 months ago

But it requires you to use the proprietary YouTube app that collects and sells all of your data

[-] Player2@sopuli.xyz 2 points 8 months ago

Yeah that's fair enough. Are there any free as in freedom solutions that allow you to sync progress through videos on multiple devices? If I'm watching some long video over multiple days it's really convenient to easily switch it between all my devices, and have it automatically continue where I left off

[-] 0x00cl@lemmy.ml 2 points 8 months ago

Web solutions allow you to have an account and can keep track of those things. There are Android apps like Clipious that connect to the web instsnces so it keeps in sync with what you watch on your browser.

[-] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 1 points 8 months ago

Does it collect data from your phone if you're not signed in to the yt account through revanced?

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 months ago

It's very likely

[-] sirico@feddit.uk 20 points 8 months ago
[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 16 points 8 months ago

Of all the streaming platforms I'll never pay for, YouTube is the one I'll never pay for the most.

[-] imgprojts@lemmy.ml 1 points 8 months ago

I'm right there with you all the way. My wallet will never have a Google hole. Not for YouTube premium or music or storage or whatever else they are thinking of selling me that is not a physical product. I probably won't buy anything physical from them either such as a Chromebook or a pixel phone because they are the most evil company in the world today.

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

There's plenty of competirion for the most evil, but Google has certainly proven not to be trustworthy.

[-] applejacks@lemmy.world 16 points 8 months ago

i pay my subscription in Argentine dollars 😁

seems turkey is the cheapest now, but a little hesitant to cancel and try to resubscribe from there in case it doesn't work..

[-] applejacks@lemmy.world 21 points 8 months ago

you know what, i'm just gonna cancel the whole thing.

hope this was worth it for them.

[-] phillaholic@lemm.ee 4 points 8 months ago

Good luck. It’s been three days for me and it’s insufferable using it with ads. I’m not even actively looking through the app, just coming across videos for work and personal projects and I’m already fed up.

[-] applejacks@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

i'll setup vanced and try my luck with adblockers.

I don't mind tinkering with it to get it working.

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 months ago

For Android, LibreTube seems to be the best solution. You can also try NewPipe. On desktop, you can use FreeTube and if you want a reliable ad-blocking solution, it's best to switch to a browser that actually supports proper adblockers. MV2, the API used to block ads is not available in Chrome or Chromium-based browsers, so if you want proper adblocking, use Firefox or LibreWolf with uBlock Origin. Alternative frontends for YouTube like Piped or Invidious are also an option, you can use them in combination with LibRedirect to automatically redirect any YouTube link to the frontend of your choice.

[-] applejacks@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago
[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 months ago

It requires the proprietary YouTube app that collects all of your data whereas all the apps and services I listed are free and open source as well as privacy-respecting.

[-] applejacks@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

been using Libretube btw, very nice app.

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 months ago
[-] applejacks@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

I'll give them a try.

I do have NewPipe installed already, but I just use it to download a video if I need it.

Will try it out full time as well as the other app.

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 months ago

I use Seal for downloading YouTube videos on my phone

[-] ech@lemm.ee 1 points 8 months ago

If you're on mobile, try Newpipe. Been using it for years now without much issue.

[-] kevincox@lemmy.ml 2 points 8 months ago

I just use Firefox with uBlock Origin on mobile. Works great.

[-] phillaholic@lemm.ee 2 points 8 months ago

For the above just Firefox via PC/MAC; But for normal content I was using AppleTV so a lot tougher.

[-] netchami@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 months ago
[-] phillaholic@lemm.ee 2 points 8 months ago

Interesting, I’ll take a look. Thanks.

[-] Gabadabs@kbin.social 14 points 8 months ago

I know it's maybe not a great replacement for everyone, but this crap is why I stopped using YouTube and just use Peertube now.

[-] Zerush@lemmy.ml 8 points 8 months ago

Another nice Desktop client (FOSS), which works very well, no ads and not only for YT

MotionBox accesses and aggregates videos via the VBML language.

It supports DuckDuckGo, BitTorrent, TMDB, Youtube, Dailymotion, Vimeo, Twitch, TikTok, Facebook, Odysee, PeerTube, Last.fm and SoundCloud.

All of this inside multiple tabs and without ever showing an ad.
