Because profit always trumps quality in the US.

Really, watch the video. The US shifted to the lowest common denominator to bump up profit, and Europe continued to pursue excellence.

So it started when the French out-innovated Saxophones and then certain Asian countries gained market share through cost savings. Is that it?
