I really want to install a custom ROM. Any good ROM recommendations while we're at it?

Should be privacy focused of course, but mostly I need something that 'just works'

You're right. Goddammit. At least I didn't pay for this phone.

Oh well, time to research which smartphone companies use the least amount of child slaves.

You can unlock the bootloaders on Xiaomi phones. Just be aware that not all have custom ROM support. Mainly those using Qualcomm SOCs have some support.
