Previously: Submission Statement Edition

Haven't done these in a while, so let's get started.

  1. Since we haven't really heard any feedback one way or the other, rule 8 is now official. To be fair, we've had a lot less microblog posts than I expected (only one Twitter/X post in the last month even after I waited longer than the initial 1-2 weeks expected, and that was a crosspost.)
  • Again, the rules are always a work in progress, feel free to give your two cents here whenever you like.
  1. As you guys know, PipedLinkBot went completely insane 2 days ago and looks like it's temporarily shut down. So, I'd like to use this opportunity to explain why I banned the bot pretty much immediately after our community reopened. (And gloat a bit, of course)
  • Even though I do agree with the principle of using open source, privacy focused frontend instead of using Youtube directly, I have a real problem with using a bot to respond every time somebody posts a Youtube link. It feels like spam, and it doesn't feel like it serves any utility besides pushing an agenda (even though many people here would agree with it). Most people have seen it around here enough to use pipedvideo if they wanted it to use it already.

  • I think it's always been a rage inducing part of the reddit experience that you see you received a response to your comment, but only have it been a bot smugly correcting your grammar or tell you all your letters are in order or something useless like that. So, for this place, I would like to make sure that everyone you talk to here is a real person as much as possible, because people inspire people to be greater, but bots don't.

Is there a way to prevent one app from automatically opening another app when tapping on links?

On iOS, the system prompts me for permission before an app can open a link in another app. However, on Android, it seems to happen automatically without any confirmation.

Thanks in advance!

https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/7710-changing-imei/8

A phone doesnt need a sim to connect to the network towers. Sim is only for billing. The network can see your imei and triangulate your location as long as your radio is on.

I have read this on https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/7710-changing-imei/8, but I'm bit confused. Does this mean our IMEI is identified by cell tower as long as the airplane mode is off? What exact setting is "Radio" referring to?

thanks a lot

thanks @rowinxavier@lemmy.world and @9tr6gyp3@lemmy.world

Short answer: Yes The network can see your IMEI and triangulate your location even though no SIM is installed. and theoretically with airplane mode off no radio is on

Hi there,

I have an Asus Zenfone 10 on Android 15. In this release of android a new feature named mobile security settings became available which are supposed to signal and protect against surveillance on the mobile network side, like at a protest.

When I try to enable these settings on my device they are off again when I reenter these settings. Do these settings have some kind of prerequisite? Are they working on your device?

Thanks!

This is a relatively old review when the TicWatch was new. This watch easily outperforms the Galaxy Ultra and even Oneplus 2R and musters in 4/5 days of battery life (looks sadly at my GW 6).

Some did report its app being not as good as S Health or Google's implementation. However it's main Achilles heel is the update problem. Pixel Watches, IIRC, get 3 years and Galaxy Watches get 4 years ; but TicWatches are lucky to get one major Wear OS upgrade and that too, delayed. Which is a Shame because the hardware here easily equals last gen Galaxy/Pixel Watches and in terms of battery life, will stand for many years to come.

In my country, Wear OS forms a tiny share of the market and Samsung has the biggest pie of it (it doesn't help that watches aren't considered for trade in here, so if and when I do upgrade to a new watch, my current watch becomes e waste and I pay full price). I did consider the TicWatch but seeing it's relatively poor software support went with Samsung. However, damn if I said that I love Samsung's battery life or charging implementation. The WPC mechanism wastes so much heat and throttles itself to heck in hot temperatures.

What is the Best camera app for grapheneOS on android?

People on reddit keep saying Pixel Camera is better but developer says there isn't any difference.

Should I keep using the default grapheneOS camera or give Pixel Camera a try? And is there any third party camera (prefer Open Source) that is better than both?

thanks a lot

Just tested Pixel Camera is indeed better. Still looking for an Open Source alternative that could compete with it though

How do I simply copy a google photo to Clipboard so I can do a simple paste into any app?

https://support.google.com/photos/thread/2514728/how-do-i-simply-copy-a-google-photo-to-clipboard-so-i-can-do-a-simple-paste-into-any-app?hl=en I took a screenshot, but this would apply to anything in my Google photos. I simply want to share an image to an existing thread in a Facebook group, NOT to do a general share to Facebook in a new thread. The obvious way would be to paste from the clipboard. Is there an easy way to put a Google photo into the clipboard? There only seem to be share options. I don't want to share as a link, I want to paste the actual image.

Any solutions for this now we are in 2025?

thanks a lot

Hi everyone,

I have an old galaxy note 8 that I would like to flash and get a Linux based OS on it. I recently put lineage OS on my galaxy tab s6 and it's working great, but it looks like lineage doesn't support the note 8. I heard about cyanogenMod but it seems like thats discontinued. I just have some games I want to play from the Google play store, so my needs are basic, so just having a simple OS for games that the devs are keeping up to date would be great. Thanks!

Need Android Launcher Recommendation

Is there a Android Launcher that supports

  • organize app icons in bulk
  • automatically add newly installed app icon to homescreen
  • an option to add all already installed app that aren't on home screen to home screen
  • easy to organize app icon on home screen into folders
  • easy to organize app icon on app drawer into folders (may not be necessary)

appreciate any helP

Hey. I am turning to you for help. I have a redmi watch 5 active and I would like to connect it to the gadgetbridge app, but unfortunately I can't. The original app for this watch is mi fitness. Has anyone tried pairing it with the gadgetbridge app? If so, could he tell me how to do it, or is there any universal authorization code?

The phone I want is only available as GSM/Global and says it specifically won't work with Verizon. Is that information up to date? I thought CDMA was abandoned a while ago.

This phone works on LTE and shares some 4g and 5g bands with Verizon. Can I use it?

I always disable it. Having everything using the same exact colour palette is boring/homogenized. The themed icons are even worse, simultaneously killing iconography art and making it much more difficult to differentiate between apps in the app drawer quickly.

I'm looking for an easy to use, light weight app to connect to my local SMB share (via username and password).

Any suggestions?

The "big" ones either cost or are shit.

UPDATE: thanks everyone for your suggestions! I'll give the apps a shot and will report back. This will take me some time tho - bear with me!

What is the best degoogled tablet for an artist

what is the best tablet for iodeOS, GrapheneOS and LineageOS

  • with smooth stylus support that is as good as apple pen
    • palm rejection
    • pressure sensitive stylus
    • works well for krita / excalidraw / xournalapp
    • latency
  • at least 16GB RAM and 256GB storage

For iodeOS, it doesn't seem to support any tablet device officially

For GrapheneOS, the only choice is google pixel tablet (or maybe pixel fold). However

For LineageOS

  • What tablet+stylus+LineageOS has the best performance?
  • What tablet+stylus+LineageOS has the best balance between price and performance?
  • Can someone share their stylus experience on krita / excalidraw / xournalapp?

Sincere thanks

i use my device to play my audio which is almost always an audiobook or podcast with the occasional baseball game through the mlb app as well. most of the time i'm listening while i'm getting in the car and also most of the time it's not the last thing i was listening to when i got out of the car. what i want to do is pretty simple- keep playing the thing i was already listening to which is especially important to me because the official mlb app is NOT supported by android auto, so i can't control the audio on my headunit.

note- game audio will still play the through bluetooth but not being able to control the audio on your headunit defeats the purpose of having android auto in my opinion.

For a while I've disliked how high the minimum volume on Android is sometimes. Been searching on ways to fix it and most of the solutions I found required proprietary apps. But then I found this blog post from 2019 which was a pretty good solution to the volume thing. This involves modifying the files that define the volume curve (root is needed).

The relevant part is this:

On a recent-ish version of Android, the two files you want to mess with are:

  • /vendor/etc/audio_policy_volumes.xml, which defines what type of audio stream (media, phone calls, earbuds, bluetooth, etc.) uses what type of audio curve.

  • /vendor/etc/default_volume_tables.xml, which defines the default audio curves referenced in the previous file.

If you've never modified files on Android, I highly recommend plugging your device to a computer, enabling USB debugging and connecting through adb. You will likely need to remount the filesystem, as it's in read-only mode by default:

$ adb shell
$ su
$ mount -o remount,rw /system

I don't really care about anything else than media volume, so here is the curve I ended up with. It goes very low and gives you more control at low volume, while still being quite loud at maximum volume. You will need to experiment with your device though, as DACs are all different.

<reference name="DEFAULT_MEDIA_VOLUME_CURVE">
<!-- Default Media reference Volume Curve -->
    <point>1,-9000</point>
    <point>10,-8000</point>
    <point>20,-7000</point>
    <point>30,-6000</point>
    <point>40,-4000</point>
    <point>60,-3000</point>
    <point>100,-2000</point>
</reference>

For reference, the scale goes from -9600 to 0, 0 being the loudest sound your device can produce.

As all things Android, if you are not building your own images, this will get erased next time you update your device. Don't forget to backup the files you modify, as audio curves are easy to screw up!

In my case I only needed to modify /vendor/etc/default_volume_tables.xml.

On my device the curve from the post was a bit too low (first three volume steps were almost unhearable) so after messing around with it I found a more sane one for mine. Gonna leave that here too in case it's useful:

<reference name="DEFAULT_MEDIA_VOLUME_CURVE">
<!-- Default Media reference Volume Curve -->
	<point>1,-8000</point>
	<point>5,-7500</point>
	<point>10,-7000</point>
	<point>20,-6000</point>
	<point>40,-4000</point>
	<point>60,-3000</point>
	<point>100,-2000</point>
</reference>

(Again, this can be different for each device)

Have a great day :D

It’s not officially supported, but I can see a few “unofficial” community builds. I like the idea of getting a small phone as a media player. I have some experience with installing operating systems, but never a phone. How difficult is it? Is this a good idea?

I'm using a Sharp Aquos Wish from 2022, because it's 5.8 inches tall. It just barely fits in my pocket, but honestly is a bit uncomfortable. I wish I had a phone about 5.5 inches tall. Ideally with the latest android OS, a good battery, and wireless charging.

NOTHING like that exists! The closest is maybe the Unihertz Jelly Max, which is Android 14 instead of 15, and doesn't support wireless charging. It's also made in China, and comes preinstalled with spyware.

I could use GrapheneOS if I got a Google Pixel, but Google doesn't have a line of small phones. They even developed foldable phones so they could make a smaller foldable phone if they wanted, but instead they created the abomination that is the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which is a gigantic 6 inch phone when folded, and unfolds into a tablet-sized device. For the love of god, WHY!???

The whole point of foldables was to make phones smaller, not make them twice as big! Who was responsible for this?

I don't know what to do. At this point I think I may never upgrade my phone. I'll be using my Sharp Aquos Wish 10 years from now, and then abandon phones entirely when the network stops servicing Android 11.
