Bloom County is an American comic strip by Berkeley Breathed which originally ran from December 8, 1980, until August 6, 1989. It examined events in politics and culture through the viewpoint of a fanciful small town in Middle America, where children often have adult personalities and vocabularies and where animals can talk.

My wife is several years younger than me, and I just caught the tail end of the Cold War.

The other day, we saw the end of WarGames on TV, and she just doesn't understand how real that possibility was to us. I never did duck and cover drills, but it definitely felt like nuclear war was a real possibility. It's also interesting how just a few years changed so much.

but it definitely felt like nuclear war was a real possibility.

What is old, is new again.

I, myself, grew up in rural NM not terribly far from Trinity site (the site of the first atomic detonation). I am young enough I missed all of the drill's and such in school, but our elementary school did have a bomb shelter.

If my schools did, I wasn't aware of it. Quite possible there was a basement designated for it though.

Bloom Country is a perfect snapshot of the 80s.
