Hey tech-savvy folks!

I find myself at a crossroads between two options: the GMKtec Nucbox G2 and G3, both currently available at discounted rates on Amazon. This marks my inaugural venture into the realm of home servers and labs, and I'm seeking guidance from the experienced minds here.

My primary goal is to tinker with Dockers, explore intriguing projects, immerse myself in Proxmox, set up Pi-hole, and generally experiment with various home server applications. While I'm new to this landscape, I'm determined to make an informed decision.

Just to clarify, I don't intend to use the mini PC for Plex or gaming, as I've already got a pretty robust gaming rig for those purposes.

Another query that's on my mind: should I consider upgrading the RAM from the standard configuration to 16GB or 32GB? Or is that premature at this stage? Moreover, will a 512GB storage suffice for my needs?

I warmly welcome insights from anyone who has hands-on experience with either the Nucbox G2 or G3. Specifically, I'm eager to learn about their capabilities in running Docker, Proxmox, Pi-hole, and other home server applications.

Please feel free to share your experiences, recommendations, or any essential pointers that could guide a novice like me. Your input will be immensely valuable in kickstarting my journey into the world of home servers and labs. Thanks a bunch in advance!

I bought a G3 from China, using a coupon code from a YouTube reviewer. 99%. Bare bones.

I added a 32GB DIMM (the machine only takes one DIMM), and a 512GB SSD. The machine came without an OS installed.

I first installed ESXi 8.0U2, added the host to vCenter, and moved a Windows 10 VM onto the NucBox. It ran pretty well.

I next created a Windows To Go boot USB with Windows 11 on it. That runs pretty well also.

It's a cute machine and worth what it costs. It should run a good few lightweight applications, either as VMs or containers.
