It's not theft if the installation is vandalism to begin with. And I'm not disparaging Banksy. His art is literally "counterculture street graffiti" for the most part. It literally goes against Banksys own message to arrest someone for tampering with his street art.

In any case, removing a street sign is illegal.

Wouldn't it be illegal to install a fake street sign?

It's illegal to vandalise too, but there's no police effort on that front if your name is banksy.

Was it an existing street sign that he painted over, or was the street sign installed by him?

Existing. Man is a fucking idiot anyway, stole it in broad daylight on video.

Shittt. Stop signs are really only used at very dangerous junctions in the UK removing it could easily cause a car crash.

Yeah, not sure why he thought he could get away with it. Presumably the sign is property of the city or the department of transportation then?

And so is vandalizing one. But no one's trying to arrest Banksy. That's my point. Now it's suddenly a crime.

Isn't anyone trying to arrest Banksy? Isn't that why his identity is kept secret?

Yeah, I suspect some politician needs a $10m Banksy art piece

Is it theft if he’s performing a public service? (Removing graffiti). I like Banksy’s art, but you can’t just install random stop signs in traffic wherever you wish.

Bansky is brilliant. Art history books of the future are going to have some seriously fun chapters.
