The federal judge overseeing former President Donald J. Trump’s prosecution on charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election issued an order on Friday scrapping the March 4 trial date for the case.

The order by Judge Tanya S. Chutkan was a formal confirmation of what had seemed fairly obvious for weeks. It came after she had made a series of veiled hints that she was going to delay the trial as Mr. Trump pursues an effort to have the underlying charges tossed out with an argument that he enjoys complete immunity from prosecution.

In her order, Judge Chutkan said that she would set a new date for the proceeding in Federal District Court in Washington “if and when” Mr. Trump’s immunity claims are resolved.

If trump is immune from all criminal charges for the sole reason of being, or having been, president, then this would apply to all current and future presidents.

If trump is immune, so is clinton, bush, obama and biden.

Presidents could have any political opponents assassinated.

By the time of the night of the long knives, hitler was effectively immune from all prosecution.

By the time of the soviet purges, stalin was effectively immune.

If this case allows a president complete immunity, its a huge step towards a dictatorship.

If presidents are immune, why would they ever give up power? Trump winning this case could mean he is never president again because biden could just, stop the election and purge anyone who challenges him.

They know Biden won’t do that. Trump will.

Dark Brandon save us!

A huge step towards dictatorship? Even Putin has to pretend to follow the law. This ruling would mean that there is no law that the US President has to follow. On top of that, they can also pardon anyone else of any federal crime. That isn't moving towards dictatorship, that's already despotism.

We're never going to get a trial are we?

It seems incredibly unlikely at this point. Everything that has happened has only served to embolden him, and strengthen his base. If he does not face justice then you can be damn sure he will make everyone else face his retribution if he wins another term in November.

Even if he loses the election I predict a pardon to "protect the institution" and "heal the nation".

Holy fuck this judge is a piece of shit, the Supreme Court already refused to listen to this argument, effectively delaying this till after the election. If only Biden had the balls to assassinate 45 and call their damn bluff.

If he just kidnapped her I feel like she'd see the obvious legal reality very quickly

As long as Trump can pay his lawyers (or Trump's friends can pay), expect stuff like this to happen. Those who can afford it get a different level of justice. See, e.g., Paxton in Texas. Compare that with all the poor saps who can't make bail and get locked up pending trial with only an overworked PD to help them.

I mean, he can come up with a new claim forever.
