When I try to use Google Meet to call my wife, daughter, mom, whatever, it always wants me to send an email to them to schedule a meeting. They all have gmail accounts, and that's what I am trying to call them with.

Is Meet supposed to be an alternative to Zoom? As far as I know, you can't just call someone on Zoom and their computer/phone rings (like MS Teams).

Does Meet not place on-demand calls (like WhatsApp), or am I doing it wrong?

Yes, Meet is supposed to work like Zoom. Google used to have Duo but I think they’ve got discontinued

It didn't get discountinued it just got renamed to also Google meet. The web version duo.google.com still works.

Unfortunately Google hasn't properly integrated the two apps, so you will need to download both versions of "Google Meet"

I just checked and there's only one app but it has calling and meetings combined.

Yeah, Duo went away. So google meet is really not meant for phone calls then. What a shame.
