I truly respect these people. They did asbestos they could.

[-] dutchkimble@lemy.lol 4 points 10 months ago

They were lead-ers

[-] Geek_King@lemmy.world 48 points 10 months ago

I also believe the Scarecrow's costume was woven asbestos, as was the bristle part of the wicked witches broom.

Lead paint on Tin Man, too.

[-] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 10 months ago

IDK about this, but the Tin Man that's in the movie was the second choice for actor. The first one almost died from the aluminum powder that was in the paint. The Wicked witch's paint was copper based, so she was on a liquid diet the whole time. She also burned the shit out of herself during that first scene with the smoke and fire. Then of course Judy Garland was given all sorts of shit to fuck her up.

Thank you! This is what I was trying to remember!

The Slow Demise of Asbestos, the Carcinogen that Gave ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Snow https://archive.vn/CCy5x

They used soap bubbles for snow in “It’s a Wonderful Life”

[-] LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.one 1 points 10 months ago

Just watched a video about this that was interesting

[-] jay@lemmy.sotu.casa 16 points 10 months ago

I don't know... Can someone tell me? 👀

[-] CraigeryTheKid@beehaw.org 28 points 10 months ago

"fake snow" was asbestos flakes for a long time.

But, as much as it's joked about, large flake asbestos isn't generally going to be a problem. It's a problem when you drill/grind/pulverize into a dust (friable) and inhale it.

[-] red@feddit.de 13 points 10 months ago

That said, if you inherited xmas/winter decorations that has fake snow on it, I'd recommend you get rid of that in a safe way.

[-] CraigeryTheKid@beehaw.org 4 points 10 months ago

Oh jeez, yes sorry, I'm not saying we should bring them back! Just that it wasn't deadly to the touch, etc.

Asbestos should definitely be removed from our surroundings.

Wasn’t the tin man’s body paint super cancerous as well?

You don't even wanna know about the flying monkeys. Suffice to say, California condors are now endangered, and the monkeys have a fear of staple guns.

[-] craftyindividual@lemm.ee 1 points 10 months ago

They're barely above the condor minimum :(

[-] Thcgrasscity@lemmy.ca 5 points 10 months ago

It was aluminum paint, and made the 1st tin man very sick, so sick they almost died.

[-] GrievingWidow420@feddit.it 12 points 10 months ago

And they lived happily ever after.
