New Zealand on Friday opened its first hospital exclusively treating kiwi birds, and vets have already nursed the first patient back to health—a chick nicknamed "Splash" that tumbled into a swimming pool.

They're delightful creatures, and make strange noises, if you are unaware.
The mating songs may remind you of what you might expect, but some of the sounds sound quite primeval or even scifi.

OMG. I can't believe I've never heard that before. It's amazing and so many things at once.

Birds really are the descendents of dinosaurs.

How was this not already a thing?

@tkk13909 according to the article it's because we didn't have enough kiwi before now to need it specifically. They were endangered.

New Zealand has a lot of Bird Rescue hospitals for birds in general and they treat kiwi. But the article says their nearest one at the moment was an hour's drive so they opened a new one focusing on kiwi specifically.

It's a good idea, hopefully they will become specialists.
