Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

They went from denying to shifting the blame and responsibility to the consumer to now sayin "well its too late, oh well, better luck next time chap"

Ava then you ask, "...what do you mean it's too late?"

Gotta keep them answering questions. Don't let them control the conversation: https://youtu.be/CaPgDQkmqqM [11 minute Innuendo Studios video]

My conservative father brought up something akin to climate change, so I raised one eyebrow and hit him with my best Jon Stewart "do go on...", then he immediately switched gears to how it's climate cycles and blah blah blah, I just laughed and changed the subject so he couldn't bog me down into a political argument on my birthday.

I'm not going to watch a video for information - but to essentially agree with you, good person, I assume the general summary went from

  • "climate change isn't real"
  • to "ok sure climate change is real but it's not caused by humans"
  • and then next is "ok fine it was us but it's too late to prevent it anyway"
  • followed by fiery death

But the billionaires will have built lifetime self sustaining areas and bunkers by then.

Or...

They'll discover immortality and be like, "come on guys, we only have one planet."

followed by fiery death

Any minute now, they'll be saying it's the Apocalypse and a welcome fulfillment of Biblical prophecy (see also: Israel).

I’m glad he took a moment to specify the difference between pessimism and doomism.

I readily admit that I’m a quiet pessimist… but I also hope I’m wrong, and I still think we should do everything possible to combat climate change.
