Hi,

I will certainly buy a new android phone in the next month and I will need help choosing which one.

My requirements : has support from LineagesOs, ability to root, good battery, NFC and Google Pay should work even after root, camera should be at least OK, price under 200€ (or even 150€). I have seen devices in that range that satisfy almost all the requirements.

My current phone is Mi Mix 2 from 2019 and still usable but battery drain in one day even though I don't use it that much. I changed battery recently but nothing changed so I am always carrying an external battery. So a similar phone with bigger battery and good camera can be a good candidate. I always bought Xiaomi devices and I don't know how are the other brands.

Get a second-hand Pixel 3 and put Lineage on it.

The GrapheneOS team strongly recommend against rooting devices. Google Wallet doesn't support them as they won't pass Google's Safety Net. Never tried to root a GrapheneOS device so not sure if it's possible to force a pass.

If root is must i guess you are right

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

They also strongly recommend against using Firefox

[–] BigBrainBrett2517@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The beloved Firefox? Would you - in a nutshell - explain this to me, please ??

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

There's some kind of native sandboxing situation with their chromium browser that Firefox doesn't have. The way they shit talk Firefox in the process though makes me skeptical it could possibly matter that much

I see a refurbished q28gb model for €210 on a website here... But the Pixel 3 is six years old by now. Is that a good price for this phone? I have a Huawei Mate 10 pro which is starting to act up, but that's only a year older.

It’s cheap yet functional, well-supported by lineageOS and other custom ROMs.

It also looks beautiful.

I dunno... I also see a Pixel 6 for about 40€ more. Which is also supported by LineageOS, at least. Seems a better buy, but I'm not too well-informed here. What do you think?

[–] fin@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Newer models would get more support in the long run, but they tend to be expensive

If Pixel 6 is affordable, then that would be the best option.

Check which devices are supported under the LineageOS(forMicroG) device lists:

If it's under there,
then LineageOS(forMicroG) will be supported officially.

Magisk (root) should work on any of these devices:

Additionally, I like to use the compare functionality of GSMArena to compare device hardware specs (battery, camera, nfc, etc):

Thank you for the answer.

It will seem that I am asking to do that job for me but I am asking to have some advice choosing between those devices. There are many devices in that list that will satisfy my requirements and I will need to choose between them.

[–] Rikj000@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 8 months ago

I've always been happy with OnePlus devices.

Their build quality and specs are good for the price and they are often well supported by LineageOS.

However I think its personal preference.

So I'd say look for any brand which you like,
and check if there is a device available within your price range, with specs that seem sufficient for you.

Check moto g32 codename devon. good battery backup and officially supported by lineageOS

Root + Google pay is possible at all?

[–] Sprokes@jlai.lu 5 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

Yes, it is possible with play integrity bypass module for magisk.

It is working on my current phone and in fact I did the config just yesterday after upgrading to LineagesOs 21.

[–] Zak@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

It's also working for me with the same setup. I made a real transaction with it today.

[–] dracs@programming.dev 3 points 8 months ago

Yes it's possible. From my very basic understanding of it there's two ways Google can verify devices, using software or dedicated hardware. As long as Google continues to accept the software check you can root and still pass. Google can't reject the software results without cutting off a large number of older or cheaper phones. There's no way to get around the hardware check as far as I know.

Hi OP. Sorry I don't have an answer to your question but I do have one suggestion for consideration when purchasing a new phone, and that's battery capacity. I'm not sure if you much about batteries, apologies if you do, but for a vague reference 3000mAh is on the low end, while 5000mAh is a pretty pumping battery. Personally, I only buy phones with a minimum 4000mAh battery capacity.

Of course how long the battery will last battery varies on based on numerous factors, including but not limited to the phone hardware, screen size, what apps you run, and much more.

[–] Sprokes@jlai.lu 1 points 8 months ago

I know that 3000mAh is low but it wasn't the case back in 2017. The issue is that I changed the battery but still lasts the same time I the previous ones.

IDK where you from mate but you should look for something good at AliExpress, you will have to wait some time cos it's an international buy but it's where I personally shop for electronic stuff. Plenty of refurbished stuff from 3-5 years ago at very good price, good luck 🙏🤞

Edit: why did you specially look it can be rooted?

What about these:

Original OnePlus 5T 4G Mobile Phone Dual SIM Card 6.01'' 6GB+64GB 8GB+128GB 16MP+20MP 4K@30fps Video Octa-Core Android CellPhone https://a.aliexpress.com/_mPUcLj0 Original OnePlus 6 4G LTE Mobile Phone Dual SIM 6.28'' 6GB+64GB 8GB+128GB 16MP+20MP 4K@30/60fps Video OctaCore Android CellPhone https://a.aliexpress.com/_mNSWdf0 Original OnePlus 6T 4G LTE Mobile Phone Dual SIM 6.41'' 8GB RAM 128/256GB ROM 16MP+20MP 4K@30/60fps Octa-Core Android SmartPhone https://a.aliexpress.com/_mqQdAZY Google Pixel 3 4G Original Unlocked Mobile Phone 5.5'' 64GB/128GB ROM Snapdragon 845 Android Octa Core 12.2MP&Dual 8MP CellPhone https://a.aliexpress.com/_mMbcwKa Google Pixel 3 Qualcomm 845 LTE 5.5" Screen Smartphone 4GB RAM 64GB/128GB ROM Cell Phone Dual Camera Unlocked Original Mobile https://a.aliexpress.com/_mLVVjpG

Let me know what do you think about these options.

[–] Sprokes@jlai.lu 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Thanks. I need to have root to remove the pre-installed applications and remove ads.

[–] PoliticallyIncorrect@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

You can use adb to uninstall pre-installed apps and private DNS and browser AdBlock to avoid ads, you don't need root for that, I have some other good recommendations of devices you can buy if you will not need to root it.
