Anything and everything about retro and modern console repair.

If you've got a broken gaming console you are trying to fix, come here to talk about it. If you want to flex about a repair, post here. If you or your console's last lover did a non-destructive electronic mod to their console, or have a question about the options available or how to do it, you are welcome to post here.

If you suck at soldering, we still love you, but we might roast you.

If you did an extreme modification such as turning one of the few Nintendo Playstations into a Rubik's Cube, flex elsewhere. If you're trying to FIX a Nintendo Playstation that someone turned into a Rubik's Cube, post away!

The original issue turned out to be a faulty power supply. While I wait for those fuses to come in figured I would replace the board caps and add the GEM.

Just preventive maintenance. N64 caps aren't prone to failure (since before the plague) but they are reaching 30 years old soon.

Can you give a link to the mod parts you used?

Thanks! One goal I have for this sub is for it to be a jumping off point for folks looking to learn about what’s out there. This extra info adds a lot to your post, rock on.

No problem. Also also leave this video here as well. It goes over the N64Digital install, which the soldering steps are exactly the same as the Gem. It's a great resource for anyone looking to get into this type of soldering work.

Glad to have it. The N64Digital mod always seemed super shady insofar as they would only really make it available to a small group of installers. Seemed more of a $$ scheme than a mod that normies could get their hands on. So glad that there’s a real alternative now.

How does the deblur GEM image quality compare to, say, upscaled s-video with deblur-patched ROMs? It’s hard to tel much of a difference when watching YouTube videos.

I guess I'm pretty fortunate, I was able to preorder the N64Digital in the first wave. Yeah the fact they can have a single board for multiple consoles should keep it in stock. I don't actually can't compare. I went straight from using a cheap hdmi adapter to learning to solder just so I could install the N64Digital. I can say it looks amazing and super clear. And the scan lines help games like Goldeneye (really helps the menu text be legible). If I had proper capture cards I would upload raw footage somewhere.
