I think a lot of us are still waiting for the Sandworms they showed off back in 2016...

Should be a lot closer since fauna is actively being tested right now along with Jump Gates.

I check out star citizen news every few months and plan to buy the game once the campaign comes out so I'm not deep into the news but wasn't it just a demo or something of sorts that won't be added to game? I may be just misremembering the info though.

Their original appearance was a strictly scripted setpiece (or a lie if you will). Officially they are intended to exist in the Leir system but we don't know when and in what form it's going to happen.

Yeah, the original sandworm that was shown off was basically a demo. There are plans to actually have the sandworm on a desert-like moon/planet that's on the other side of the galaxy.

When I say "closer" what I mean is that we're starting to see fauna in-game with some workable AI and that jump gates will finally allow us to explore other systems...

Unfortunately, I would still not expect to see these sandworms anytime this year or the next. Right now 3 years would be my guess. But there are so many systems and features that will need to get in first. Pile on the tech debt and it could easily take longer.
