No. They will just use the $10 card and leave. They will prey on the fact that "get a gift card for your computer troubles" is something a legitimate company has done.

Buy a $10 Xbox gift card and send us the code so that we can activate it. Then you get back to the shop and get $20 in cash - $10 for returning the card and $10 from us. We'll pay the tax, too.

Is there more info about this? I could only find Chinese forums like https://m-weibo-cn.translate.goog/status/OdaBMza1L?from=page_1005052963774131_profile&wvr=6&mod=weibotime&jumpfrom=weibocom

The chips (basic TTL logic, perhaps) are all DIP. This may predate the term "open source".

Yes, get yourself eclipse glasses, a pinhole projector, a floppy disk, digital camera or whatever allows you to observe the eclipse safely – no phenomenon is worth risking your eyesight over. However, the consensus is that you can watch the sun flares without protection during totality. The totality lasted 0 to 4 minutes depending on your location.

A solar or lunar eclipse?

Nah, the F is displayed while counting down the time of an active exercise period, while C is displayed when counting down the time of a resting period

[–] ChaoticNeutralCzech@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I asked ChatGPT and it said it stood for Custom (set your own timing program) and Free (workout as you wish and press a button to record the times for later use). Not a bad idea but I had told it F is for the active period and C is for the resting period, so it is obviously wrong. Another wording gave me Focus / EFfort and Cool-down / Catch your breath.

I tried the Ecosia AI chat too, pasting the post title and it replied with Focus and Catch your breath.

I wish I had your research skills. Where does it even say that?

The letters may have been chosen for early, limited 7-segment display drivers, such as a hex-to-7seg decoder. However, these fell out of use when transistors were no longer expensive in the 1990s and it made more sense to minimize the number of chips rather than each chip's complexity, so the main microcontroller used 14 GPIO pins or a single external LED driver to multiplex all 6 digits. Before the 1990s, it probably did not make sense to make this device digital at all, I think gyms would just use analog clocks with marked dials.

Is this based on another language?

Areas with loam touch all three sides. So... Some kind of loam exists without sand, some without clay and some without silt. I am not a soil scientist but I'd guess that any substance that contains neither is a kind of loam.

First sentence of my post, for this very reason – they own the franchise, after all. The law may also change the other way but that's very unlikely to happen in the US within 50 years.

I wonder if they could develop a system of draconian DRM (only their own theatres with metal detectors, personalized online streams...) and mildly edit movies every few decades so that they can destroy the original and effectively renew copyright. The gaming industry’s always-online DRM makes nuking a release possible but copyright lasts for about 20 console generations (we’ve only had 8 so far!) so they don't even have to do that.

Assuming copyright laws don't change by then, otherwise there is no way to know.

A plausible answer is 1977 (when the film was released as Star Wars) + 95 years (for pre-1978 works) = after 2072. However, the film had been edited by George Lucas for the 1997 "Special Edition" release. Does this mean that I cannot publicly play the Special Edition VHS tape I have at home in 2073 and have to wait until 2093, or perhaps 70 years after GL's death?

George Lucas has been infamously attempting to erase copies of the original movie. Therefore, no HD home video release for the 1977 film exists, however, a fan effort known as the "Despecialized Edition" compiled different versions of the movie from various sources, patching the Special Edition 4K Blu-ray rip to try to replicate the original 1977 experience. Does this legally questionable version enter public domain in 2072, or does this only apply to official (SD) releases?

Anyway, the Despecialized Edition project as well as George Lucas's treatment of the originals is an interesting rabbit hole to delve into for any movie nerd.

TranscriptPart of a 9/11 memorial: marble trapezoidal prism block in the corner of a paved area in a park. Silver writing in modern font reminiscent of Nokia Standard Multiscript, used in Symbian mobile OS UI:

"Lets Roll"

On September 11, 2001 United Flight 93 took off from Newark International Airport in New Jersey with 38 passengers and a crew of 7. While in flight, the plane was hijacked by terrorists. Passengers on board knew about the other hijacked planes and took action. "Lets Roll" was their call to action. The passengers over powered the terrorists and the plane crashed in Shanksvillle, Pennsylvania killing all on board. It was believed that the plane was headed towards another target location in Washington D.C.

The penultimate line is in noticeably smaller font to accommodate its length, and so is the centered title for some reason. Most of the text is left-justified but the last three lines are centered, fit and right-aligned, respectively. The quote marks are not rounded, and there are at least three grammar mistakes in the short text.

I'm pretty sure you know what follows...

Image transcriptA recreation of the Piper Perri Surrounded meme. A white CASIO CFX-9850GB PLUS calculator is laid on its side on a cushion while three TI-83 Plus and two TI-84 Plus calculators, all black, are standing behind the cushion. The faces of corresponding actors are shown in 4-tone pixelated pictures on each calculator's respective screens, grayscale on the TIs and sepia-toned on the CASIO thanks to its (limited) color graphics. Words of the text "Original meme by Chaotic Neutral Czech" are used in place of the SHIFT functions on a row of keys on the Casio as a mild watermark.

Phrases like know one's [general subject of interest] are very annoying to me because they seem rather self-centered. I am obviously fine with knows his way around or Know Your Customer because the use of possesive pronouns is appropriate.
On the other hand, now I know my ABCs is atrocious because the modern Latin alphabet obviously does not and never did belong to a single person, and has been used by billions of people in the last few centuries.

Do you know other English phrases with unnecessary posessive or personal pronouns? Do they exist in other languages? Is there a name for this linguistic phenomenon? Where do I complain? ~/s~

The previous one by The Black Company was too wide to defend against Italy. Let's make this one! I know LEMMY.ML is not the full Lemmyverse but we don't have space for JOIN-LEMMY.ORG now.

To use its template, install the r/place userscript (guide) and go to https://new.reddit.com/r/place/?jsontemplate=https%3A%2F%2Fraw.githubusercontent.com%2FChaoticNeutralCzech%2FmyRandomImages%2Fmain%2FplaceLemmyTemplate.json&screenmode=fullscreen
or if you already have it, import one of these (either the URLencoded one in URL, or the raw one in plugin settings)
