My guess is someone at the credit card company screwed up. May have even been someone new.
I think the idea here is that it's a man-made reservoir and they're not worried about maintaining an ecosystem.
My thoughts are that the title should be relevant.

I want it to hurt them. I want it to fail. But I fear they're doing this now because they've run the numbers and are pretty sure the vocal minority that will leave permanently won't be noticed in a month.

It's built on a reservoir so I assume that means waves aren't an issue. I was glad to see it was a reservoir and not a natural lake or ocean. It means there shouldn't be any (?) environmental impact.
I also wonder if it is beneficial for reducing evaporation.

Btw, I think you mean "as far as I know" (expressing a fact) instead of "as far as I'm concerned" (expressing an opinion)
