I've definitely had this experience before. Why are people such jerks, if someone asks the rules because they aren't sure or it isn't clear just tell them the rules. It makes it feel so unwelcoming when people refuse to tell you the rules and expect you to read minds.

Because they still think they aren't and want to pretend they aren't, they believe the law is on their side and they don't have it in them to lie to a court and/or falsify evidence that they did do it "clean room" and betray the law which they believe is on their side.
