From Aldanmarki on Twitter (the rest of the thread is also worth reading)

Truly fascinating development. A new armed group calling itself the "Islamic Resistance in the land of the Two Holy Mosques" has just emerged out of Saudi Arabia, announcing its existence with the launch of a drone towards Israel.

Thoughts, newsmega heads?

From @/Iran Spectator on X:

𝗜𝗿𝗮𝗻’𝘀 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗺𝗶𝗿-𝗔𝗹𝗶 𝗛𝗮𝗷𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗵 [commander of the IRGC Aerospace Forces]:

“We will soon reveal a weapon more sophisticated than drones, missiles and nuclear technology that will change everything”

Is there anything to this? And if so, does any newsmega heads wanna wager a guess at what the new weapon could be?

Palestinian Authority to attend BRICS summit, apply for membership (The Cradle, Aug 26, 2024)

Palestine’s ambassador in Moscow, Abdel Hafeez Nofal, said on 26 August that Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas had received an invitation from President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming BRICS summit.

“We received an invitation from President Putin to President Abbas, and he was invited to participate in the BRICS summit prior to the invitation [to visit Russia] … but we will see if the prime minister will participate,” Nofal said. “The most important thing is that we [Palestinian representatives] will participate in this event,” he added.

The ambassador said Abbas and Putin have a good relationship with one another and can meet at any time.

“After our first participation in the BRICS summit, we will send a request to join this association,” Nofal revealed.

He also said that Putin promised Abbas that the upcoming BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan, scheduled for October 2024, will include a session dedicated primarily to Palestine.

Old article, but with the BRICS summit in Russia approaching (22–24 Oct), I need to hear what (if anything) my fellow newsmega heads expect will come from this.

From UNIFIL on X, posted a few minutes ago after the IOF attacked them:

Despite putting on protective masks, fifteen peacekeepers suffered effects, including skin irritation and gastrointestinal reactions, after the smoke entered the camp. The peacekeepers are receiving treatment.

Dongsheng (Eastern Voices) is an international collective of researchers interested in Chinese politics and society. Interest in China is growing, yet our understanding of the country is dominated by narratives from the Global North.

We share stories about China – highlighting Chinese perspectives – and focus on geopolitics, economy, national politics, agriculture and environment, science and technology, and people’s life and culture. We are particularly interested in stories that have relevance to the people and countries of the Global South.

maybe a sign that european leaders are starting to get a little nervous about the implications of a regional war? we've seen how disastrous the (failed) attempt of weaning europe off russian oil has been for their industries. what would happen then if suddenly the export of oil from the middle east comes to a sudden stop? i'm not sure european leaders are as keen on this murder-suicide pact as the US seems to be

Israel Defense Forces tells Ireland and Unifil to remove peacekeepers from Lebanese border outpost Irish Times, Oct 4 2024

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has told Ireland to remove its peacekeepers from an outpost on the border with Lebanon as its invasion of the country continues.

Sources confirmed the request was made to the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) and individual countries contributing troops, including Ireland. Israel has been told the troops will remain in place.

edit: this part is probably also worth highlighting

There is one Irish outpost on the Lebanese-Israeli border, which is known as the Blue Line. This outpost, designated post 6-52, is manned by a single Irish platoon who are responsible for observing the border and reporting on incursions.

We are herbivores in a world of carnivores. It is a power politics world, yet we still have in mind that through trade and preaching the rule of law we can have influence on the world. We must still preach the rule of law but we have to be aware there are some leaders that need to be dealt with in a different way.”

Borrell predicted the war in Ukraine, and the eventual outcome, would be one of the three driving forces creating a new world order, alongside competition between China and the US, and the rise of the global south.

He admitted he was no fan of the term “global south” to describe such a heterogeneous group of people but that an entity existed that “consider themselves part of an alternative to the western models”. He said it was critical to “try to avoid the alliance of China plus Russia, plus parts of the global south.

“The people of the global south want to be recognised because 40, 50 years ago, when the world order was built, some of these countries did not exist. Either they were colonies or so poor they did not have a vote.

“So now they are independent countries and they have been growing economically, demographically, and they want to have a say.”

He added: “Understandably these countries are hedging. One day they look at Russia , another at China. At the UN they vote against the war in Ukraine but many of them do not have this feeling of moral indignation that we have.”
