A long time ago I read some cyberpunk novel, and one of the characters had an ocular implant that got infected with malware that flashed spam ads for Indian brothels in his vision 24/7, even with his eyes closed, until he went completely postal.
Wouldn't put it past him...

If things get big enough that hobbyist instance owners are getting overwhelmed, it might be a good idea to organize a nonprofit, under the NPR business model. Not collecting data or breaking your brain with advertisements, though periodically, they're gonna have to go hat in hand, and beg users to feed their Patreon. Hey, I'm more than happy to throw a little in!
Nice thing about this business model is that being a nonprofit, the point of its existence is to fulfill its mission (to help independent distributed social media thrive), instead of to make money for owners/shareholders.
There's several clients in the works - I'll be looking at Sync for Lemmy, as I was a customer of Sync for Reddit.

They're completely despicable. They need full defederation.
Exactly - for example with weed subs. A lot got summarily banned, the rest NSFW'd, because Spez wants Reddit G-rated for the IPO.
Over here, a Mormon instance defederating a weed-oriented instance isn't going to shut down the stoners' community.
If you don't like the way an instance curates content, switch to a different instance, or make your own instance and curate content yourself.
The people screaming about free speech for bigots & fascists seem to neglect the free speech of the instance owners and admins.
They're doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. Paying for bandwidth and servers. Donating their time to create the software, work out the kinks, and moderate the communities so we don't strangle each other.
From their perspective: Would you want to use your money and time to rebroadcast Nazism or similarly toxic ideology? Because that's what they're being asked, and most of them say "HELL NO!" When the chuds are demanding that these people rebroadcast such crap, it's like they're asking these admins to do a Hitler salute with them.
This is their space. They have free speech rights too. That's what curation is, free speech. You send a message by the choice of messages you rebroadcast or refuse to rebroadcast.
According to some of the posts in here, apparently, wanting to ban Nazis from your instance and refusing to rebroadcast their toxic shit is being "entitled"...
