https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/10/mastodon-for-android-update/

The most recent update of Mastodon for Android introduces a highly anticipated feature–lists. With the new update, you now have the ability to create custom lists and categorize your follows based on specific topics or interests, while removing them from your home feed.

This not only helps in decluttering your home feed but also allows you to engage with certain topics on your own terms, when you are ready. Additionally, we reworked the home tab to provide easy navigation between your home feed, lists, and followed hashtags, so you can get the most out of your experience on Mastodon.

We’ve got more updates in the pipeline as we aim to make Mastodon the most beautiful and delightful social media app on Android. Our iOS and web teams are also working steadily on new features and improvements, so stay tuned!

Here's a Verge article mentioning this: Mastodon’s latest update makes it easier to follow the news

Salient point. Dont get me wrong, I use FF reader mode all day long and I sing its praises to all who will listen. But I am using this to access content over Tor when cloudflare would otherwise prevent me from doing so.

I would not recommend for anyone to feed all their browsing to a third party in a way that can easily be tied back to them, but I am using this tool to overcome a specific obstacle when I encounter it and not otherwise.

Maybe I should have described this scenario more completely at the start of my post 🤷

Do y'all know about textise? I don't see mention of it come up in a quick search. https://www.textise.net/

It can be used with the duckduckgo bang !textise

It also works over Tor, where I can use it as a proxy to avoid Cloudflare checkpoints.

I don't think that it is open source but not completely sure.

Copy from the site intro:

Textise is a new way of looking at the Web. It’s an internet tool that removes everything from a web page except for its text. In practice, this means that images, forms, scripts, adverts, they all go, leaving plain text. Find out more here... (https://textise.wordpress.com/about-textise/)

How to use this page

  1. Type or paste the URL of a web page into the box below and click "Textise". A text only version of the web page will be displayed.
  2. Type a search term into the box, select a search engine from the drop-down list, and click "Search". You will be taken to a text only version of the search results.

It will give a json response. Visiting a second time should return "Already claimed" if it worked.

This helped me to get around an issue I had with the link not loading on the main gog.com page when there was a free giveaway. (Credit)

I downloaded Audacity on a friends Windows PC yesterday, and it allowed me to export MP3 without asking for any other steps!

From Audacity's website:

FAQ:Installing the LAME MP3 Encoder

The software patent on LAME encoding library has expired, so now the LAME library for MP3 export is built-in with Audacity for Windows and Mac. Linux users will still need to download and install the free and recommended LAME third-party encoder to export MP3 files from Audacity.

Linux users should use the following instructions to download and install the free and recommended LAME third-party encoder to export MP3 files with Audacity.

Windows: LAME is now built-in with Audacity for Windows.

Mac: LAME is now built-in with Audacity for Mac.

Linux/Unix: See the LAME installation section on Installing and updating Audacity on Linux.

Searching for replacement for Bibliogram, I found an website called imgsed.com .

It was sufficient to my needs.

One problem was that it seemed to fetch only a few comments of a post.

Here's the website's own About page:

imgsed.com can't verify user information, so you need to pay attention to the copyright when downloading photos.

I used to use the /r/television sidebar but it isn't very comprehensive. More recently I've been using Wikipedia's 2023 in American Television page, specifically the debuts page, which is good. Some other countries have their own pages, such as South Korea.

Know of any other good places?

Text of Drescher's speech

“Thank you everybody for coming to this press conference today. It’s really important that this negotiation be covered, because the eyes of the world, and particularly the eyes of labor, are upon us. What happens here is important because what’s happening to us is happening across all fields of labor, when employers make Wall Street and greed their priority and they forget about the essential contributors that make the machine run.

“We have a problem, and we are experiencing that right at this moment. This is a very seminal hour for us. I went in in earnest thinking that we would be able to avert a strike. The gravity of this move is not lost on me, or our negotiating committee, or our board members. It’s a very serious thing that impacts thousands, if not millions, of people all across this country and around the world — not only members of this union, but people who work in other industries.

“And so it came with great sadness that we came to this crossroads. But we had no choice. We are the victims here. We are being victimized by a very greedy entity. I am shocked by the way the people that we have been in business with are treating us. I cannot believe it, quite frankly: How far apart we are on so many things. How they plead poverty, that they’re losing money left and right when giving hundreds of millions of dollars to their CEOs. It is disgusting. Shame on them.

“They stand on the wrong side of history at this very moment. We stand in solidarity, in unprecedented unity. Our union and our sister unions and the unions around the world are standing by us, as well as other labor unions. Because at some point, the jig is up. You cannot keep being dwindled and marginalized and disrespected and dishonored. The entire business model has been changed by streaming, digital, AI.

“This is a moment of history and is a moment of truth. If we don’t stand tall right now, we are all going to be in trouble. We are all going to be in jeopardy of being replaced by machines and big business who cares more about Wall Street than you and your family. Most of Americans don’t have more than $500 in case of an emergency. This is a very big deal, and it weighed heavy on us. But at some point you have to say, ‘No, we’re not going to take this anymore. You people are crazy. What are you doing? Why are you doing this?’

“Privately, they all say we’re the center of the wheel. Everybody else tinkers around our artistry, but actions speak louder than words, and there was nothing there. It was insulting. So we came together in strength and solidarity and unity with the largest strike authorization vote in our union’s history. And we made the hard decision that we tell you as we stand before you today. This is major. It’s really serious and it’s going to impact every single person that is in labor. We are fortunate enough to be in a country right now that happens to be labor-friendly, and yet we were facing opposition that was so labor-unfriendly, so tone deaf to what we are saying.

“You cannot change the business model as much as it has changed and not expect the contract to change too. We’re not going to keep doing incremental changes on a contract that no longer honors what is happening right now with this business model that was foisted upon us. What are we doing… moving around furniture on the Titanic? It’s crazy. So the jig is up AMPTP. We stand tall. You have to wake up and smell the coffee. We are labor and we stand tall and we demand respect and to be honored for our contribution. You share the wealth because you cannot exist without us. Thank you.”

Oh yeah, complete with no explicit emotion. The reddit alien was smiling.

The advantage Kitty-chan holds is her lack of a mouth. The reason for this is summed up best by Yuko Yamaguchi, the current character designer (meaning "boss") of Hello Kitty:

"[She doesn't have a mouth] so that people who look at her can project their own feelings onto her face, because she has an expressionless face. Kitty looks happy when people are happy. She looks sad when they are sad. For this psychological reason, we thought she shouldn't be tied to any emotion – and that's why she doesn't have a mouth."

The power of Hello Kitty's interpretation now extends a layer deeper, beyond our idea of what she represents into our idea of what she is feeling. This gives her life in our minds, in a way that "mouthed" cartoons can't. What Mickey Mouse is feeling at any given moment, not counting his situation or environment, can be clearly seen through his mouth. Hello Kitty, lacking this feature, could be feeling anything at any time! And thus whatever we may be feeling can and probably does get transferred onto her face.

Another longtime JD user here, I'd love to hear what your reasons are for each of these!

[-] syzizeky@lemmy.ml 5 points 11 months ago

Cheers! I'd like to pass on this info though, for anyone who enjoys both like myself:

Caffeine drinking potentiates cannabinoid transmission: interaction with stress effects - Neuropharmacology 2009

Our data suggest that the cannabinoid system is implicated in the psychoactive properties of caffeine and in the ability of caffeine to reduce the pathological consequences of stress. Chronic caffeine assumption sensitized GABAergic synapses to the presynaptic effect of cannabinoid CB1 receptor stimulation by exo- and endocannabinoids. The synaptic effects of caffeine were slowly reversible after its removal from the drinking solution. Furthermore, although exposure to caffeine for only 24h did not produce measurable changes of the sensitivity of cannabinoid CB1 receptors, it was able to contrast the down-regulation of CB1 receptor-mediated responses after social defeat stress.

I copied the rest from bloommedicinals.com, just the relevant bits. Also added the links to the studies and the pages with additional descriptions.

TL;DR:

  • Low levels of caffeine can help to maximize the effects of THC, but too much caffeine can lessen the impact of your cannabis
  • Caffeine and THC can both increase dopamine levels, but too much at once can trigger anxiety, agitation, and paranoia

What Happens When You Smoke Weed and Drink Coffee?

Since coffee and cannabis may offer so many health benefits on their own, you might think it’s safe to assume that enjoying a little bit of weed with your coffee would be okay. The reality is … it might be safe for most, but not for all. Here’s why.

THC and coffee can boost the amount of dopamine in our systems. Although dopamine can promote feelings of happiness and euphoria, too much of it at once can trigger anxiety, agitation, and paranoia. In addition, both caffeine and THC can both increase your blood pressure and heart rate.

This is why many doctors advise that those with heart conditions and those at risk of heart arrhythmia or stroke, should not mix caffeine and THC. So, if you’re new to mixing coffee and cannabis, it’s important to consult your doctor to make sure it makes sense for you. If it does, begin with lower amounts of coffee and cannabis than you would normally consume on their own. Then if needed, you can increase your dosage slowly.

Back in 2014, a study was conducted to measure the effects of mixing caffeine and cannabis on squirrel monkeys. The results of this study were published in the Journal of Neuroscience. (also described here)

The monkeys were given the ability to self administer cannabis whenever they wanted. All they had to do was to pull on a lever. When the monkeys were given low doses of a substance similar to caffeine, they seemed less likely to reach for the THC. But, when they received high doses of caffeine, they seemed to reach for that lever more often.

Then in 2018, a study led by Marilyn Cornelis at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine seemed to back up these findings. This time, the study examined the effects of mixing cannabis and coffee on humans. It found that the more caffeine people consumed, the less cannabis their body was able to metabolize. (also described here)

So, although small amounts of caffeine can help your THC go a long way – too much caffeine can lessen its effects.

Multilemmys (lemmy.ml)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by syzizeky@lemmy.ml to c/lemmy@lemmy.ml

Hey everyone! After my first week of settling in here, I think what would give my lemmy experience the biggest boost of any single added feature would be Multilemmys (or Multicommunities), so we can see the combined feeds of multiple communities in a single streamlined feed. I guess the purpose of this post is to spread awareness of this as a concept and point to the ongoing discussion on Github:

Support for grouping communities / multi-communities #818

Cross-instance 'multireddits', that are also automatic and topic-based #1113

Community Grouping #3071

I have seen users post that this was how they initially thought the fediverse would work when it was explained to them. I thought this would be the case as well when I joined.

(Edit to add: an older post with discussion on this idea including devs' thoughts at that time which shed light on why it does not work this way.)

Although I am new to this world, I feel this is one of the most intuitive abilities associated with the concept of the fediverse and that it MUST eventually be possible, the sooner the better.

This is similar to "multireddits", and the equivalent way to use them would be to combine feeds from different communities that are on the same instance, so for example I have one multilemmy to combine the feeds from /c/politics, /c/news, /c/worldnews, /c/worldpolitics (all on lemmy.ml).

Then additionally with Lemmy we have equivalent communities hosted across various instances, and it would be a new and different kind of ability to be able to combine these into a single multilemmy, so for example I have a multilemmy combining lemmy.ml/c/politics, lemmy.world/c/politics, beehaw.org/c/politics, etc.

I found this idea mentioned a few times around lemmy, where @deadcyclo@lemmy.world and @communist@beehaw.org pointed out the above open github tickets for these ideas.

Those github discussions were a fascinating read for me! Its clear that the boffins have already put a fair amount of thought into these possibilities, and identified questions that will need to be answered such as

  • how to deal with communities that have the same/different name but are or are not actually the same subject
  • duplicate posts and/or cross posts
  • whether to cause automatic/default links or not
  • how to implement this in a way that is of most benefit to the health of the lemmy ecosystem
  • there seem to be two separate use-cases also: one being communities intentionally linking to share content and the other being a user creating their own custom combinations, either for personal or public use.
  • how to handle subscriptions

Discussion continues even this week! After reading through all the ideas, I don't have any specific preference but I am excited to see what they eventually decide to implement as I'm sure it will be rewarding. Personally I think getting some cross-instance version of this should become a priority as soon as they feel they've adequately responded to the reddit migration, which I imagine would be a month or two down the road.

I gotta end by saying how happy I am to be here after leaving Reddit, this really feels like the start of something incredible. Cheers!
