Not a problem to me. It's their instance, they can do what they want with it. The problem is people coming in here and telling them what to do and what should be right or wrong.
Did you uncheck "Show Read Posts" in the settings?
I don't have something like that, but every time this kind of question is asked, City of God (2002) always comes to mind.
Embrace, extend, extinguish. Google also did that to rss/atom.
