City Hall leaders say the consultant drafting the report on the catastrophic failure of the Bowness water feeder line needs two more months before the findings can be shared with Council, but can't say why there is a delay.

Council barely blinks, but the mayor asks a few blunt questions that go unanswered. General Manager of Infrastructure Services, Michael Thompson, says he had no good reason, just that they need more time.

I've recently been trying to go vegan, and have some old recipe books that I got from the thrift shop that I want to try making vegan. Some of the recipes call for gelatin, and I want to try making them vegan by using agar powder instead.

I've tried Walmart, Superstore, Safeway, Sun Rise Health Foods, E-mart, and none of them seem to carry the powder. I found a place that sells agar packaged on it's own, but the packages seem small and costly for the amount of powder I'd likely get if I ground it at home.

Does anybody know where I can find the containers of it? I'm willing to pay a larger amount assuming it'll last a long while.

Calgarians will get one last chance to dance the summer way, local style, as the first ever Eastern Slopes Music and Arts Festival kicks off in Bridgeland at the end of August.

The festival, which celebrates some of the best local bands and musicians currently creating music in Calgary and in Alberta, was the brainchild of a quartet of artists and communicators in the music community: Tory Rosso, Hannah Unterschultz, Meghan McMaster, and Ian St. Arnaud.

Construction on the new Calgary Event Centre, now known as Scotia Place, began quickly after its official groundbreaking on July 22.

For the past two years, the semi-annual Pop-Up Care Village has provided for Calgary’s unhoused individuals a festival that focuses first on their needs.

The Parks Foundation Calgary has increased funding for its Amateur Sport Grant Program and Building Communities Grant Program by 60%, raising maximum grant amounts to $125,000 and $50,000 respectively. Fireworks are set to snap, crackle, and pop at this year’s GlobalFest, along with many other events to enjoy with the whole family.  GlobalFest is set to go ahead from Aug. 15 to 24 at Elliston Park.

The Calgary Green Line LRT project has undergone significant changes since its initial approval in 2017. Originally planned as a 20-kilometre line costing $4.65 billion, the project has faced delays and cost increases. After multiple revisions, including changing from a tunnel to a bridge over the Bow River, the current plan approved in July 2024 is for a downsized 10-kilometre Phase 1 at a cost of $6.248 billion. This shortened line, running from Eau Claire to Lynnwood/Millican, reflects budget constraints and inflation, with six planned stations cut. The city has increased its funding share to $2.9 billion, while also allocating $1.45 billion to other major projects including a new Flames arena, BMO Centre expansion, and Arts Commons building.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Calgary is undertaking repairs on the Bearspaw water feeder main, starting August 26 and lasting until the end of September. This work will require Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions as the main is taken offline. The repairs involve strengthening 16 newly discovered weak spots along a 10km stretch of pipeline. Mayor Jyoti Gondek has outlined both short-term fixes and long-term plans, including potential pipe replacement and the addition of north and south feeder mains to improve water distribution from the Bearspaw treatment plant.

So I'm finally moving to Calgary within a month (yayy). I kinda want to support co-operatives here. Of course, I'm aware of the existence of Calgary Coop. Aside from that, do you know any cool cooperatives whose products/services u use?

Any good credit unions? I heard servus was good. Are there any smaller shops/cafes which are some sort of cooperative? Any mentions would be appreciated! :)

The Alberta government has backtracked on funding cuts to the low-income transit pass in the province’s two biggest cities.

According to information provided by the Alberta government, they will backstop the funding commitments they’ve made to both cities. In Calgary, that amount is $6.2 million.

On Tuesday, both of Alberta’s big city mayors spoke out about the funding cut, with Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek saying that it was a “cruel” decision by the province. Calgary city council, after discussing the item behind closed doors, unanimously approved a plan to urge the province to reduce its requisition of the education portion of the property tax and ask them to pay the full amount of property tax on provincially owned properties in the city, up to the $6.2 million.

Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon spoke with media via Zoom on Wednesday afternoon. He said they’ve always wanted to ensure the low-income transit pass programs continue.

“The province does not want to see the low-income transit program in our two largest cities go anywhere, and we will make sure that we’re there to support if that’s what’s needed to be able to have it continue,” Nixon said.

He said that after conversations with both cities he recognized that cities needed further support to continue the programs.
