As we've been building out our site, we've wanted to showcase the icons of various projects and protocols. However, there's been a real lack of any kind of icon font for that purpose...Mastodon is pretty much the only Fediverse project to be featured in FontAwesome, and the ForkAwesome project has been dormant for a long time.

So, we've been building our own.

The Mastodon For Harris campaign has raised close to $500,000 within two weeks of being live. It is probably the largest attempt for political organizing on the Fediverse, and may provide a playbook for other efforts going forward.

So here I am sitting on lemmy.ml which is defederated from threads (and which I chose primarily for that reason) and I see a comment from the user above.

That comment is on a community at lemmy.world, and the user is apparently registered with their @threads username through @sh.itjust.works.

IIRC .world does NOT respect the fedipact, and I guess this means sh.itjust.works must not either, but I'm super confused by the username.

So I guess I still need to just block all the threads users I see, defederation or not?

If you follow any of the #GoToSocial developers you've probably seen this going around already, but 0.17.0 of #GoToSocial will be the first release that includes interaction policies, aka reply-controls.

In the first iteration of this feature, you'll be able to configure your account so that new posts created by you will have an interaction policy set on them, which determines whether your instance drops or accepts replies, likes, and boosts of your posts, depending on the visibility of the post, and whether or not an account trying to interact with you is in your followers/following list.

So for example, you will be able to create Public posts that can only be replied to by your followers and people you follow, or unlisted posts that nobody can reply to or like, etc.

GoToSocial interaction policies will be a superset of other reply control proposals created elsewhere (and already implemented by softwares like Pixelfed and Peertube), so your GoToSocial instance should recognize interaction restrictions set not only by other GoToSocial instances, but by Pixelfed and Peertube as well.

Hi, sorry, I hope this isn't to spammy, I was revising some writings on the various social media protocols and wanted to test some stuff before I stated it as fact.

Anyway, I might as well provide some potentially interesting information instead of just completely worthless spam. What it appears (and confirms if you're seeing this) is that you can post to lemmy via a blogging/microblogging instance as long as you '@' the lemmy community. First line is the title and the rest is the post itself.

While monitoring my Pi-Hole logs today, I noticed a bunch of queries for XXXXXX.bodis.com, where XXXXXX are numbers. I saw a few variations for the numbers, each one being queried several times.

Digging further, I found out these queries were caused by CNAME records on domains that look like they used to point to Lemmy/Kbin instances.

From what I understand, domain owners can register a CNAME record to XXXXXX.bodis.com and earn some money from the traffic it receives. I guess that each number variation is a domain owner ID in Bodis' database. I saw between 5 to 10 different number variations, each one being pointed to by a bunch of old Lemmy domains.

This probably means that among actors who snatch expired domains, several of them have taken a specific interest with expired domains of old Lemmy instances. Another hypothesis is that there were a lot of domains registered for hosting Lemmy during the Reddit API debacle (about 1 year ago), which started expiring recently.

Are there any other instance admins who noticed the same thing ? Is any of my two hypothesis more plausible than the other ? Should we worry about this trend ?

Anyway, I hope this at least serves as a reminder to not let our domains expire ;)

Today, we sat down and reviewed NeoDB, a Fediverse review system that lets you track books, movies, music, tv shows, games, podcasts, and more. There's some really incredible ideas beneath the surface.

I tried to make a simple list indicating which kind of profile is followable from each other type of fedi social network.

A large percentage of threads I've created or participated in have been deleted. Worse is that when visiting the URL everything is completely gone.

This is much more drastic when compared with Reddit thread deletions, where the thread is there and so is the discussion. And the creator of the thread has access to their content.

The Lemmy method discourages people from participating in threads and creating high-quality content, much more so than the Reddit method.

A bunch of lively and useful discussions on Lemmy have completely disappeared. And it makes it seem like a waste of time to even contribute content here.

EDIT: I see that the "fediverse" link for posts has been removed. I posted this to lemmy.ml from a lemmy.world account and there's no way for me to get the lemmy.ml link now. And when I crosspost it it shows a lemmy.world link instead of the lemmy.ml one. I think this should be changed [back].

Does feddit.de work?

Good morning everyone, we noticed that feddit.de has been unreachable since last night (server error). But how come I from Mastodon or Lemmy.ml can find some messages published this morning? Maybe the problem is only with the web server? While can you still connect via the app?
Can anyone give me an explanation?

Is there any real or serious conversation or work around the idea of a feature-full social media browser?

Basically something like a web browser but for “all the social media” along with useful organisation features too.

For locked down big social APIs, this makes less sense nowadays, but for open alt-social systems, *it is likely the most valuable promise of such systems* that they can become like the web, reachable through an awesome all-in-one app.

A thought on "moderation bubbles"

A plurality of contentiously incompatible but independent moderation "spaces" ... is the only way in which the internet is good at digesting substantial and contentious topics.

* conversations on the internet generally suck.
* On any contentious front, strong moderation can run the risk of "echo chambers".
* For those willing to survey multiple "bubbles", an interconnected plurality provides a de facto dialectics.

Thus federation for the win!

I think this is a good incentive for Journalists to be more active on the fediverse.

Following #lemmy communities from #mastodon has gotten much better

Version 19.4 introduced automatic hashtag-ing (see https://lemmy.ml/post/16585416)

Posts get federated with a hashtag matching the community name.

The important bit is that comments to posts *don't* get the tags.

Which means you can follow the corresponding tag on mastodon and get a feed only of posts.

EG: #asklemmy

If you're starting a community, giving it a unique enough name could help prevent overlap too.

I left reddit on june 12th last year in protest of spez's decision to change the reddit api from being free as in free beer to an unbelievably expensive cost. That same day, I joined lemmy on a now abandoned account.

At first, I had a hard time adapting to lemmy's significantly smaller community, but I got used to it and learned to embrace it. However, recently I started missing reddit a lot more, and after some consideration, made an account on the (demonic) website.

But I don't think it felt the same way as before, sure, there was more posts, but they lacked a heart and soul, they were all so generic, as if it lost it's spark.

Has anyone else that's been on there noticed anything similar??
