When an amateur restorer discovered slides showing street scenes from early 20th century Middleton – located near Manchester in the UK- he was keen to find out where exactly they were taken.

With the help of local historians, he was able to track down the location of some of the photos. But is there another way to identify where these historical photos were taken?

Using historical Ordnance Survey (OS) maps we were able to independently locate a number of the images. Here’s a quick guide to how we did it.

Another darktable text tutorial! I know darktable has a reputation for being intimidating, but it's really powerful software and you can get a lot done with very few modules.

For fans of text tutorials/haters of video tutorials, I've started writing some darktable tutorials! Here's one on emulating film halation.

Priorities in order:

  1. 80-90% SOOC (can't give much time to editing). I am ready to give time to learning and practicing manual controls though.
  2. ergonomic, light.
  3. travel photos, capturing scenes like I see them with my eyes.
  4. low light photos.
  5. long-lasting gear. Okay with getting prime and telephoto lens later if needed.
  6. videography is not a priority as of now, may explore later.

Thanks!

Update: Decided to go with Fujifilm X-S10 + XF 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 as I liked the fuji SOOC jpegs more. Sigma lens would have been sweet but I'm okay with the tradeoff.
Thank you everyone for being so helpful.

Update 2: Finally went with Fujifilm X-T30 II + XF 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 instead for looks, this was a close one as I had to give up Ibis and that grip.

I love Digikam, but fixing photos is a lot of work. So I use Luminar NEO to get looks that would take hours I don’t want to spend. Is there an open source alternative to Neo? Something that supports LUTs, presets, etc? Thx.

The community around buying and selling gear and just watching awesome stuff pop up for sale regularly is one of the reasons I've stuck with the site for so long.

Other than FredMiranda, e$ay, Craigslist, I'm not sure what other options there are (I'm not on FB).

Is there any chance something like photomarket could pop up in the fediverse? What other sites are you trading on?

This is an area of Photography I really struggle with. So I'm interested to learn if anyone has any good tips for capturing photos of trees.

It's winter here in the UK and most of the trees are now leafless.

Grateful for any thoughts.
