Welcome to Tokyo Disney! Where dreams come true in Japanese.

This is where you can post and discuss all things related to the culture of Disney and how it uniquely relates to the culture of Japan. Everything from official announcements about the Tokyo Disney Resort parks to your personal photos of Fantasy Springs.

Rules:

  1. You must follow all of the rules of your Lemmy instance and this Lemmy instance (lemmy.world).
  2. Be polite and civil. Personal attacks and even just poking at people is the quickest way to get banned. Treat others like Mickey would... even if they're behaving like a Jafar.
  3. Anything you post must be related to Disney and to Japan. If it lacks a connection to either, it might be removed.
  4. Due to the nature of this community, posts/content/links in English or Japanese are allowed, although English is preferred. If you do post in Japanese, please try to offer an English translation. Posts and comments in any other language will be removed.
  5. If you post someone else's content (text, links, images, videos, etc.), give proper attribution in your post. If you claim someone else's content or fail to properly credit the creator, it might be removed.
  6. Avoid reposting the same content. Search the community first to be safe. If you repost something that is already here, it might be removed.
  7. If you see something cool posted on another community that you think belongs here, please use the crossposting feature to properly credit the original poster and to link back to where it came from. Avoid making a separate post, even if the crosspost links to a community or instance you personally do not like. If you do not crosspost, it might be removed (especially in favor of a crossposted version).
  8. Absolutely no NSFW or NSFL content. There will be no warnings.
  9. This is not a marketplace community. If you want to sell or buy things, look for an appropriate community to do so. Posts or comments attempting to conduct a transaction will be removed.
  10. This is not a place to self-promote. Apart from official Disney news, this community is not a blog for content creators, even if they do focus on Disney in Japan. If the same sources becomes disproportionally featured, those posts and comments might be removed.

If you're not sure about something, message a mod before posting.

COVID is unfortunately still a problem that is effecting millions around the world, but the reduction in public spectacle and limit on crowd sizes have come to an end pretty much everywhere. This summer, the parades and events will be in full swing at Tokyo Disney Resort - including the ones that shower spectators with water. Have you ever or do you plan to participate in the summertime parades? Do you enjoy the idea of getting splashed (or even soaked to the bone) with water during such events?

Between April 8th (Tuesday) and June 30th (Monday), Tokyo Disneyland's attraction "Star Tours: The Adventures Continue" will be offering a special version for a limited time that includes scenes of characters and planets from the popular Disney+ series "Star Wars: Ahsoka," "Star Wars: Andor," and "The Mandalorian."

In this special version, you receive a message from one of them and fly over the previously unvisited planet Seatos, weaving between giant space whales called Purrgil, to reach your destination somewhere in the galaxy.

(After the special version ends, the new characters and planet scenes will be added to the existing randomly selected adventure scenes.)

Since each Tokyo Disney Resort park opened, they have both had their own version of Christmas festivities. That is, until COVID. By the time Christmas 2020 rolled around, OLC had reopened the parks, but the parades and decorations were extremely scaled back compared to 2019. (The somber hilarity of the Tokyo Disneyland Christmas parade being exactly one float featuring Santa and lasting less than five minutes.)

Now, Tokyo Disney Resort is back to full power, but the major holidays have been streamlined so that both parks (beyond their unique venues and stages) now have roughly the same event.

Which Japanese park do you prefer for a Christmas holiday?

It can be in general or a specific celebration from the past or present, which Disney Christmas do you like the most?

The more family-friendly and generic pop culture Christmas of Tokyo Disneyland, with a ground parade featuring Santa Claus and/or Mickey Claus, The classic Christmas tunes of the holiday version of the Country Bear Jamboree, The Nightmare Before Christmas edition of The Haunted Mansion, the Christmas version of Electrical Parade Dreamlights, and the giant Christmas tree in the center of the World Bazaar.

Or the slightly more mature musical performances and water show of Tokyo DisneySea, with more elegantly decorated buildings and Aquasphere Plaza, the special Christmas performance of Big Band Beat, and the nighttime Christmas water show?

"Christmas Family" debuted during Tokyo DisneySea's inaugural performance of Christmas Wishes in 2010. The song was composed by Gregory Smith.

~~Sadly, I cannot find anything online or in my physical collection that tell me who the lead singer is.~~

Edit: I was able to contact Gregory Smith directly and he revealed that the singer is Jackie Stressman.

I was able to get some pictures of the ongoing demolition of Space Mountain, which had stood largely unchanged since the park opened in 1983.

Top photo & this photo taken from Pan Galactic Pizza Port.

As you can see, they are simultaneously renovating the space that used to be Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters. So access is completely cut off between Showbase Theater and Stitch’s Encounter. You have to detour to the main parade route to go around the construction.

Taken from Crystal Palace.

Good shot of the cranes that are now a permanent fixture of the park’s horizon.

Funny enough, Crystal Palace was also completely covered with a facade of a painting of itself and undergoing renovations at the time.

Taken from Le Tavern de Gaston.

RIP Tokyo Disneyland's Space Mountain, this post is for you. Also, I've always preferred the Christmas music in Tomorrowland. It's so much more energetic.

A critique of the new Fantasy Springs branch of Tokyo DisneySea's ride, restaurants and ambiance. Most of it is excellent... but some of it is not so good.

Above: The billboard for Captain Eo, presented by JCB @ Tokyo Disneyland, just prior to the attraction's permanent closure.

After 14 years, Captain Eo reopened in Tomorrowland @ Tokyo Disneyland in 2010 and played until 2014 when it was replaced by Stitch's Encounter. Captain Eo originally ran in Tokyo Disneyland from 1987, replacing Magic Journeys, until 1996, when it was replaced by Honey, I Shrunk the Audience.

Unlike the American parks, the revival of Captain Eo wasn't billed as a "revival", rather it simply came back in its original form minus some of the special effects for which the hardware has since been removed from the theater.
