the issue is that the people who do actually like him really like him, recently it's gotten to freakishly cult-like levels

The issue as seen from the outside is that

freakishly cult-like levels

are on all sides of this. Jules Verne's description of Americans (that fist fight scene, I think it's "Around the world in 80 days", but I may be wrong) has aged well.
