one of my liberal brainworms was that during the colonial period when Britain and other European powers were going around the world and murdering and pillaging and looting, that if information about it was more widespread then there would have been more opposition; the lack of knowledge back home meant that there wasn't accountability. now I know that that is false. you can beam footage of a dozen schools full of children being obliterated into Americans' eyeballs, headless children and all, and all you get is the deranged ravings of vote-drunk cowards. there is no level of bloodshed that can sate the white psyche

exactly, but back in like 2016 or whatever I was like, well, it's one thing if you hear back from the returning ships or telegraph lines something like "Our Mightee Soldiers of Her Majesty's royal army hath struck down the barbarians in the Pacific, so honorably discovered by James Cook" and another if you're being exposed to photographs and (obviously impossible back then) video of the actual atrocities taking place to your fellow human beings by the people around you
but now of course, I think all it does is provoke an emotional reaction that fails to lead to any changes, even the most basic one of not performing a voluntary action like voting, thus saving you effort and being an objection to genocide, albeit a small one, because that emotional reaction can be coped and rationalized away into "well actually, voting for Biden/Harris is fine because they're saying they want the fighting to stop" which is a talking point that completely falls apart even with the five second google search of "how much money has the US given to Israel in 2024." but of course they want to believe that a false reality is true because if one actually lives inside reality, that generates difficult questions whose answers would run counter to your own interests
although I largely agree, what I have found is that a large number of people just aren’t seeing the images coming out of Palestine and they act as though it is impossible that the media they consume wouldn’t have shown them. People experience media differently from each other in this day, and it leads to vastly different ideas about reality. Particularly if they believe that the media is anti-israel on some level, they think that “CNN and MSNBC would love to be showing that every night” They literally live inside of a fantasy football game where whatever they see is reality and there is no space outside of it. Essentially that whoever will see the images coming out of gaza have, but it simply wasn’t enough because the corporate controlled media either never showed it or used the algorithm to contain it. I think this is why the demonstrations and actual political work over this still has importance.
This of course is different from the young staffers and petty-bourgeois types at the DNC (and their supporters) who absolutely saw at least some of the violence, but either didn’t care at all or those who avoided it intentionally but continued to follow “the news.” Those types are objectively the worst and there are so many more than i would have imagined
I agree. I think live streaming the genocide is actually doing something. I think it's why more people care now about Israel rhna at any point I've seen in my lifetime, and why they're trying to do things like ban Tik Tok. The easier they can make it to avoid by not showing images or stories in mainstream media, censoring social media like (Meta has been doing), and banning alternative media (like Tik Tok), the less resistance they will face.
