MODERATORS

there's a lot of random funny hexbear lore out there, like rock stacking, but that's not what I'm asking about. I'm more asking about the really huge stuff, like the transphobe purging or the r/vcj onboarding that apparently almost ended the site. has anyone done any good writeups on those? really hoping for one about the r/vcj onboarding but I'll take any i can get my hands on

idk rule 4 on the comm seems fine to me, the person doing the write up just needs to do their best to stay relatively neutral about the whole thing

It's not explicitly forbidden or anything, and I would personally find it very funny to see someone (not me) attempt a neutral write up on the VCJ debacle

Any volunteers?

i really hope someone does it was the whole reason I made this post and out of all the super major events on the site I feel like i know the least about it, all i know is somehow the vegan comm went from dooming saying that the mods were all out to destroy them and the site and then somehow ??? vegans make it onto the admin team (i think to the point where they were the majority?) leading to the status quo today

There was an informal rule for a long time that mods would remove the comments and possibly ban (if you kept doing it) any comments relitigating it. And any comments about what happened tended to cause relitigation

i mean I guess I get it but I'm so curious i wanna know what happened 😭

One surviving 18-months-later post from one of the /c/vegan mods who quit (not a neutral write-up, but since the thread wasn't locked / removed and is one of the top all-time posts on /c/vegan I hope it's okay to link)

yes I've read that post, that's what I'm referring to with the dooming, I assumed this was in the middle of the worst of it, but from my perspective it seems like most of the site's vegans ended up feeling like the site was in a better spot? or was this a post mortem on everything that went down? at least that's been my impression, i constantly see pro vegan comments and you have to cw pics of animal products and what not so if it was after everything went down I'm not sure what the poster meant by "The draconian measures against talk of veganism never went away."

[–] Wertheimer@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This was a post-mortem, from someone who had originally left the site during the struggle session, so it's a weird thread in that the post is from someone with still-raw wounds and the comments are from people who had experienced the evolution of the site since that time.

[–] destroyamerica@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago

ahhh i see that explains it although there is an interaction between a former admin and a couple vegans where they're still talking like you cant talk about veganism on the rest of the site

I definitely couldn't do a neutral write up but I can drop a few points that I think are often overlooked. I've been on hexbear since before the vegan comm existed (on other accounts) so while I haven't always been the most active, I've seen the whole history.

One key point is that hexbear vegans weren't content before VCJ joined. We already had the sense that hexbear was anti-vegan but we were quieter about it. Example (EDIT: fixed link).

There was already a strong cultural overlap between c/vegan and r/vegancirclejerk before the lifeboating. For example, dog diet crossed over here, and was to my memory the precursor to the VCJ hostilities. (c/dogdiet comm request, negative reaction to dogdiet posting).

But I just noticed who I'm replying to so idk why I'm even bothering.
