Hello new Lemmy friends!

Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.

The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.

Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.

We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

Am I crazy thinking it’s wild to put your kid in residence when there is a housing shortage for students and she has not 1 but 2 houses to live in locally.

[–] Rarepotato@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 weeks ago

I’m kind of happy for her to get away from TBP influence. Once she gets an education and learns about the world a bit more (not that she needs University for that but it’ll help) she’s going to catch on to how unhealthy that dynamic is. I hope she gets to explore the world away from online exploitation surrounding her.

More like 4 because she probably could live with Nana K if she wanted, and they have that apartment in the basement of her own house.

[–] Poofluencers@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hmmm…we don’t know where she’s going but some schools strongly recommend (if not mandatory) that 1st year students live on campus. If she is going to an art school proximity to studio time might also be important.

And, I’m sure there is a good reason why M would want to be on her own. I bet M feels free and safe outside of the house she lives in with Sarah.

I definitely see the pros of living on campus but we are living in different times for sure.

I have to agree. There’s a real housing crisis in Guelph, especially first years. Taking a spot when you live in the city and can easily commute takes a spot from someone else who doesn’t have the option to commute. At its peak the housing waitlist was 1356 I believe, mostly first years. Parents had a hard time finding off campus housing and many had to go elsewhere. I wouldn’t expect TBP to care about that though. Ideally they would just have enough residence spots for everyone though but apparently can’t count on Guelph to care about that either.

It’s pretty disgusting. Imagine all the students who are absolutely stressing about a place to live or how they will even be able to afford it if they can manage it.

We don’t know that she is at University of Guelph do we? I don’t even want to speculate but I kinda hopped she was going to OCAD 🙂.

Edited to add - I see you did some sleuthing 😂. Priviledged SNL has never demonstrated any care for others so that’s not surprising.

[–] lightweight@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yes she is. See screenshot someone above posted.

EDIT: 🤣 we must have been posting at the same time. Not my sleuthing but you know there’s always a good sleuther around here lol

I was 😂! One thing about our Lenny page that I like is that it does seem a little less intense. You informed me kindly to keep me in the know. On the Reddit page every once and a while if you posted something not everyone agreed with it felt like fellow snarkers were coming at me. I didn’t like that part because we were all part of the community for a reason and us being united felt important. When we were intolerant of different ideas it just seemed we were as bad as Sarah and her clique.

Just something positive to share about everyone who’s come over here. 💕

[–] lightweight@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Agreed. Some snarkers can go a bit overboard but I think this group is pretty chill!

[–] bunniculamonroe@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I totally agree. If she really wanted the experience of living separately they could have converted the basement apartment for her. Taking public transit at ungodly hours is part of going to university, and would have been doable. It really showcases how much they don't have to worry about money, otherwise M probably would have chosen one of her multiple living options to avoid accumulating even more debt. I absolutely would have if I had gone to school in the same city as my parents instead of having to pay off all my student loans until I was almost 40. There are a lot of kids who have to delay going to school this year because they can't afford the living accommodations on top of school tuition.

Edit to add: I was paying back that many years for a degree that I didn't even finish. Talk about wasted money.

Wow! I didn't realize this. Thanks for sharing! 🧡

Are you Canadian? Just curious how much dorming costs are? My son goes to a state school in SoCal and it costs me just under 10K per year living at home. Dorming would triple costs 😵‍💫

[–] lightweight@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Tuition is about the same here. Residence looks like 6500-11,000 at Guelph depending on the room type. On top of that you also have to buy a mandatory meal plan for most residences (I think there are 1 or 2 you don’t need to because they have shared kitchens). Tuition is about 8000 but from my understanding that would be waived in this case as she has a parent who works at the University.

[–] Bitchwhiskers@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I feel like everyone here knows who the 1st husband is and I can’t find it. I know the last name and I think I found a brother. It’s killing me in my “need to know!” Organ! 😂😩

[–] lightweight@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

🤣 it takes awhile but scroll WAY BACK on her ig and you will see him

[–] Bitchwhiskers@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

Ok I did that and it took for everrrrr lol. I saw him but I don’t know who he is. Oh well. I did find. Couple old pix to snark about tho.

[–] MoonChild@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago

Not crazy at all

[–] Blueeyes84@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago

She's a selfish, entitled brat, she doesn't think about anyone else beyond her bubble 🤬
