I haven't seen the show, but isn't the dad meant to be incredibly controlling and fascistic in his worldview and is actually the overall villain of the show?
Well he is from a race of immortal übermensch Nietzschean imperialist that infiltrate and take over planets but he gets an redemption arc because muh wife and kids
