I find even a mostly dead battery is still worth keeping cause it prevents interrupts if there's a short blip in power.

That's a good point, but will only work if the battery is near dead, but still allows the device to be turned on, right? Or would there be a way to make use of completely dead batteries in my case?

Oh yeah if it's completely toast then yeah you'd have to remove it.
