It does look like relations between India and the west are starting to fray. India sees itself as being sovereign and equal, but US wants it to act as a good vassal. This is ultimately pushing India to look towards the global south instead.

I don't quite see it that way, it seems more that they're trying to play the west and Brics against each other for their own benefit, like how they get to freely sell Russian oil to the US by having a foot in each camp. Modi's stupid speech at last years Brics summit where he was yapping about working more closely with g20 just goes to show that they don't really care about committing to a new system. And of all the countries currently part of it, they do technically have the least to gain from it. Frankly the India we have today is the weakest link in Brics, and I'm certain that when push comes to shove they'll side against it to favor the status quo, because there is no ideological alignment at all.

I definitely think that India is the weakest link in BRICS, but my expectation is that US will continue to try and play hardball with them which will ultimately leave India with no choice by to align with BRICS. US is simply unable to compromise or to treat other countries with respect. We'll have to see what happens though.
