I did this for years until the other day my friend showed me that my microwave allows you to disable the beep/chime ๐Ÿคฆ

Mine doesn't have this option (screw whoever designed this thing), so I opened it up and smashed the buzzer with a pair of pliers.

This deserves a statement of โš ๏ธ regarding microwaves. They have huge capacitors and even when unplugged for hours can shock the shit right out of you. Please don't mess with microwave electronics unless you really know what you are doing.

Mine has a few seconds buffer, where the magnetron turns off but everything else keeps going. After about 3 seconds it all stops then beeping starts.
