World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

With the abundance of languages in the EU I imagine that allows us to find quite many words that are phonetically similar to rude words of other languages.
Wouldn't it be fun to see if it's only the English language that are afforded such privileges of denial?
On the other hand I don't really care what happens in the eurovision song contest.
I'm Maltese and I fully support this. The whole song is in english, except for this one word. And it's used in this particular context, and the word doesn't really make sense in the rest of the sentence. This is definitely a "leopards ate my face" moment
I'd say the issue here is that the rest of the song is in English. It's literally only this one word that is supposedly in Maltese, in the sentence "I do it all the time, serving kant".
That sounds reasonable and I can understand the decision.
theguardian.com only gave us this for context:
That could be a new type of competition, a cuntetition will you say
I don't know the source of this list, but #15 actually means 'shit' (like with several other languages in the comment).
However, I understand it's not easy, because I wouldn't say there is a straight equivalent of it in the language. You could go for 'picsa', but that's often typically used for women, or it's closer in meaning to the english 'bitch'. 'Pöcs' has a similar vibe when used specifically on males, but it's much closer to being 'prick'. Then there's 'köcsög', which has a closer vibe to 'scumbag', but at least not so gender specific. I guess it's situational.
Drit is shit in Norwegian. Fitte is cunt
The Finnish word you have is also just 'shit' and in no way equivalent to 'cunt'. The word youre looking for is 'vittu', although it is usually (mis)translated as 'fuck'. The common translation is likely due to the prevalence of use of both 'fuck' and 'vittu' and their similar severity rather than meaning.

Russian would be Пизда (pizza). Хуй is male.
The Spanish word Coño is a much more accurate comparison.

The German Scheiße is most definitely not on the same level here, that would be more like shit.
The more direct equivalent IMHO is Fotze.
duly corrected
I will put this as an achievement on my LinkedIn profile.

Thanks for the LinkedIn Gold, kind stranger!

Isn't the Italian one just like stupid/turd/stupid turd?
Maybe 'figa'?
Also all the slav languages translate to either 'shit' or 'fuck', neither of which I would associate with cunt.
Same with Portuguese ('shit').
Greek is just 'wanker'.
And Polish is 'hooker'.
Edit: found this https://www.youswear.com/index.asp?word=CUNT

The link sports good suggestions for other languages too, usually the first option on the list
Lort means shit in Danish, the word you are looking for is fisse

Fotze ist so ein schönes Wort <3
Kinda depends on the Fotze being viewed.
One that i hate is from the high german dialects: servus
So many wanna be intelectuals always go like this when you say it: "actually did you know this word means slave, because the romans called their slaves with it and in english it means 'serve us'. So you just called me a slave"
The word "servus" doesnt come from latin and has been in use before the romans infuenced the south germanic tribes!
Do you have a source for that for me to followup? I learned te Latin root as well, but in the historic context of "I'm your servant" as a formal goodbye formula.
I'm aware of the old Germanic sev which could be argued to be the root but ice never seen a linguist or historian actually explain that!
Thanks in advance!
