I don't think you understand what the Borg are about.

[–] JustAnotherKay@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Fully providing every single need to their people in an attempt to create the most efficient worker possible? It just so happens that their "work" is assimilating people into the hive, but... The methods surrounding their work are pretty nice.

Amazing. Can't tell if you're joking or you are for real.

[–] JustAnotherKay@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Amazing. You've yet to actually make a point in this conversation, only disparage mine without any counterargument lol

At what point did I mention anything about the hive mind being a good thing? The only thing I praised was the fact that the hive provides homes and sustenance for its workers

[–] ddash@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That is basically the "but Hitler built the highways" argument.

I almost feel like you're intentionally avoiding what I'm actually saying. I am not praising the Borg as an exemplar of a good society. I am saying that they happen to have one aspect that is also present in what would be a good society. In my first comment I acknowledged that what they do is not okay, and then jokingly compared assimilation to socialism because it has 2 similar properties. I oversimplified for the sake of a joke. You're being an ass for no reason over a joke about cyborgs being kind of similar to socialism. The joke used the Borg as a subject but literally any cyborg lifeform would fit the bill because the mechanical parts provide the sustenance and protection the worker needs.

I mean... the method is basically "join us or die"... I don't think that's particularly nice...

[–] JustAnotherKay@lemmy.world -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm not talking about the method they use to work, I'm talking about the methods they use to facilitate that work. They provide their workers with homes and sustenance. I would expect to put entertainment on that list too if they weren't cyborgs

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hmm, the Borg internet (or intranet I guess) probably has a lot of entertainment material collected, but then we know that drone emotions are suppressed by implants so you wouldn't actually be able to enjoy any of it...

"Homes" feels like a stretch... an alcove is worse than one of those sleeping pods in Japan, you don't even get privacy.

Why are we taking this so seriously? I don't want to actually be the Borg. I want to be a socialist cyborg, and that's what I meant in my first comment

Edit: okay I totally did say "I'd be a Borg" but I meant a socialist cyborg. My bad

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why are we taking this so seriously?

Because it's funnier that way.

I don’t want to actually be the Borg.

I totally did say “I’d be a Borg”

You seem very confused. Join the link, the Collective will bring you clarity!

I meant a socialist cyborg.

Don't let your dreams stay dreams!

[–] JustAnotherKay@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Because it's funnier that way

I misread your tone cause of the way the other person reacted to my joke, apologies

Not with the stars though right?

Do you? The Borg are a collective consciousness, it’s the most democratic government in the galaxy.

My only problem with the Borg is they have a queen.

[–] ddash@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 days ago

Democracy isn't that everyone is being forced to be of the same opinion. They don't vote for their actions, the hive mind overrides each personality with the overarching Borg characteristics, mean assimilation of every worthy race, eradication of danger. There is no individual left in this. If you think that is democracy or socialism then I don't know what else to tell you.

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 8 points 2 days ago

I don't think enforced conformity through literal mind control counts as democracy.
