Massive protests against Erdogan happening right now because of the arrest of the Istanbul mayor. Our media is pushing it relentlessly which always has me wary.

Erdogan is very much taking out his political opposition here. The reason western media is happy about it is cause they think that if he falls then they could install somebody more liberal in his place. The west has had a rocky relationship with Erdogan for a while now. The west needs Turkey because of strategic sea access, and Turkey knows this and they milk it for all they can.

Turkey is also the largest NATO member based on active military personnel apart from the US

Which I imagine makes other NATO members rather uncomfortable given how friendly Turkey is with Russia to the point of incorporating Russian tech like S-400 systems.
